    1. Re: [ADKINS] ADKINS Digest, Vol 1, Issue 43

    3. Just a guess, but the proper name for "Telia" Adkins was probably Telitha. I don't have her listed in my database of Adkinses, but that is probably due to the fact that we did not list people born after 1890 unless they were in our immediate family. Note, Telitha was used by the Adkins and Blevins families in Wayne Co., KY, and continued to be used by the related families down to our grandmother Telitha Jane Blevins, granddaughter of Nancy Adkins, though she went by Lytha. In any case I would "assume" that she was a descendant Of Benjamin Adkins and Catherine "Stegal" last name is something else, but we have not found her true family. This is one generation of Ben & Catherine's family: Descendants of Benjamin Adkins, Sr Generation No. 1 1. BENJAMIN1 ADKINS, SR (OWENA, WILLIAMB, WILLIAM VC, JOSEPHD) was born abt 1770 in Virginia, and died 18 Nov 1839 in Barrier Community, Parmleysville, Wayne County, Kentucky. He married CATHERINE "KATE" STEGALL May 1804. She was born 1779 in South Carolina, and died abt 1862 in Barrier Community, Parmleysville, Wayne County, Kentucky. Notes for BENJAMIN ADKINS, SR: The earliest proven records of our family from 1716 through the Revolutionary War had the name entered, most often, as Atkinson although Adkins, Adkinson, and Atkins were used. Our earliest known ancestor William V. Adkins is entered in Henrico, Goochland, Brunswick, and Lunenburg Counties of Virginia with all four of the above spellings. These different spellings of the name most often occurred as a result of record keeping misspellings. Since the Revolutionary War virtually all known family members have spelled the name Adkins with the exception of the use, by some members, of Atkins. The many spellings of the name (Adkyn, Adkyns, Adkynson, Atkyn, Atkynson, Adkinson, Attekson, Addykin, Akin, Akins, as well as the above four) came about during the Sixteenth, Seventeenth, and Eighteenth centuries. Many people, because of their extremely primitive living conditions, did not learn to read and write thus when some government official (census taker, court clerk, etc) needed to record the name they did it phonetically or simply as they thought it should be. From various court records of Benjamin's ancestors it appears that none of them could write, although it is evident that Benjamin and his siblings could read and write. The widow and all the children went to Iowa with the exception of Telitha and Catharine; however, Cyrena, Elizabeth and Evelyn Alice later returned to Kentucky, living there for the remainder of their lives. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Young & related marriages in Wayne County. More About MARY ANN "POLLY" ADKINS: Burial: Mount Pisgah (Cooper Adkins) Cemetery, Wayne County, Kentucky Notes for HARMON COOPER: Charles- Well, we made it back in one piece. That was a tremendous trip. We spent the first two days in Monticello. The mill site is about 1/4 mile south of Mt. Pisgah on the west side of the road. Nature has totally reclaimed the old road; you can hardly tell it was there. We connected, purely by chance, to Wilby and Evelyn Hurt. Wilby's grandfather bought the mill from Ben Adkins, Jr. in the 1870's. They've lived there their whole lives so were well versed on the area. They took us through the woods to the mill site. It took forever to go that short distance- thick woods and undergrowth, plus lots of downed trees to crawl over. Not to mentions ticks, chiggers, and the potential of rattlesnakes. Fortunately, the only thing we encountered were chiggers. The dam is in good shape. They showed us the dynamite indentations in the limestone pieces. The foundation of the mill was there along with a couple of huge logs that Ben had buried in the bank to hold everything up. I had brought along dirt from the graves of Cansada Cooper (Harmon's daughter), Ben/Rachel Adkins, my grandmother and my mother, plus a couple of iris plants from their cemetery, so I worked the Adkins dirt in around the mill site and took a bag of mill dirt home with me to put on their graves here. Wilby also took us to the Buck-Cooper cemetery. I had 4-wheel drive so we were able to make it part way in there in relative comfort, but came up against some downed trees so we ended up on foot for the last 1/3 of that journey. I found Harmon Cooper's grave and his first wife, Molly Polly (Ben, Jr.'s sister.) That was pretty neat. I did the dirt thing with his grave, too, and brought some back to put on his daughter's grave here. I also planted the Iowa iris in the cemetery. They showed us the site of Ben and Rachel's house just across the road from the mill road entrance. Its a farm field now but it was kind of awe-inspiring to stand on the spot. They took us up to the house of a distant relative of theirs who turned out to be related to me- we have Harmon Cooper in common as-gg grandfathers. They're building a beautiful log house on Pilot Point or Peak or something. 4700 square feet of hand milled logs. Great view. I can't remember their last names but I have it written down somewhere. We also attended a Remembrance Service on Sept. 11, 2002 in the town circle in Monticello. That was pretty moving. They had an excellent speaker who must have been a preacher- if not, he should have been! Our next stop was the Mill Springs battle site, Stearns and Yahoo Falls, which was dry, but still pretty. We spend a couple of days at Cumberland Falls at the Dupont Lodge- wonderful food!
