I ran into a problem when I pulled up my WFT. I have two different entries for Thomas Adkins. One is s/o William Adkins and Susannah Lanier& b. 1803 in VA. The other Thomas is son of Howell Adkins & Elizabeth Heath b. NC (@1804. I kept both entries in my tree because I am not sure which Thomas was my 3rd great grandfather. I had corresp with a descendant of William Joseph Adkins who was the s/o of William Petway Adkins. . She based her information on the source quoted below which had been copied and sent to her by another Adkins relative. However, the name Petway was so unusual that I had searched further and found on rootsweb that name with William & Susannah Adkins in VA. In looking back over my records, I can't find any source that says the initial P. was for Petway. There were many Adkins in Montgomery Co (spelled variously Adkins, Atkins, Adkins), but they all seemed to come from the Halifax NC area--not directly from VA area. Source: p. 121 of Montgomery County TN History Book 2000: QUOTE Howell Underhill Adkins (b. ca. 178? d. Dec 27 1866), son of Thomas (b. 1730 d. 1805) and Mary Underhill Adkins, was born in Halifax Co, NC. In 1818, he arrived in southeastern Montgomery Co and settled on land purchased from Andrew Stewart. He was a charter member of the Fredonia Masonic Lodge, and at his death in 1866 was the oldest Mason in Montg Co. The children of Howell Underhill Adkins and Mary Ann were Mary (b. ca. 1803) md ___ Brown; Thomas (b. ca 1804 d. ca. 1882), md Nancy Cothern, lived in Montg. Co; Martha Ann (b. 1813, d. 1856) md David Burton lived in ??Nashville, IL; Alfred K. (b ca. 1815 d. 1857) lived in Madison Parish, LA; and Lemuel K. (b. ca. 1816), md Sylvester C. Morris. John Howell Adkins was born in Halifax Co in 1805. He was a merchant/postmaster at Somerset near Henrietta, Montg Co for more than 40 years. In 1856 Adkins storehouse was used as one of the polling places for the creation of Cheatham Co. Adkins continued the operation of the sotre until his death on May 25 1887. He was buried in the Adkins Cemetery, Montg Co. UNQUOTE If Howell Underhill Adkins is Thomas's father, we are probably still related because Howell's father (Thomas 1730--1805) came from Sussex VA and the Howell name appears in William & Susannah's line, too. Will get more information to you as I check with my sister (csf@uti.com) who has lots on the Adkins line. A few years ago, she visited the family cemetery in town of Henrietta TN which is right on county line for Montgomery and Cheatham Counties.
