I am new to the list. I am looking for info on a Jestin or Jane Adkins of Grainger Co. TN, b. abt. 1839. Her parents are believed to be Winright Adkins and Sarah Claunch. This family is shown on the 1850 Grainger Co. census, but the transcription I am using overseas shows only a (f)? 11 years old in the household, so I can not definately say this is her. In any case, she then married a Shelton, which I can document. Jestin Adkins, b. abt. 1839 married Mark Shelton of Grainger Co. TN on Aug 27, 1857 in Grainger Co, TN. B. Orville Helton, Aug 27, 1857, Wm C Mallicoat, JP 1860 Grainger Co. TN cenus: SHELTON, Mark 22, Justin 20 (f), Fielden 1, (Jestins name is shown as Jane in later census records.) They evidently had another son mamed Mark Jr. abt. 1860 or 1861. They were divorced by 1870 In 1870, the two boys, Fielding and Mark Jr. are living in different households, but right next door to each other. Their mother, with another child a John D. Shelton is living nearby. 1870 Cenus, Laurel Co. KY #51 Mahaly Warren, 56, KY, keeping house William 25, KY, farmer Fielding Shelton, 11, TN (Believe she was Mahala Long, married on 8 Sep 1840 in Laurel Co to Bassett Warren) #52 James H. Warren, 29, KY, farmer Mary A., 30, KY, keeping house (nee Wood, married 3 Mar 1868 in Laurel Co) Paulina M., 2, KY Mark Shelton, 10, TN #55 Jane Shelton, 28, TN, keeping house John D., 11 months, KY (August) They then show up in KY in 1880: 1880 Pulaski Co. KY census, Burdine & Bent Precinct. HH# 267 p. 278 Census book put out by Pulaski Historical Society Shelton Fielding head 21 Tn tn tn Lucinda wife 20 Ky NC Tn Cyrenius W son 1 Ky Jane mother 38 Tn Va Va (surely Jestin) Mark Brother 18 Tn William Bro 13 Ky John Bro 11 Ky Matilda Sis 5 Ky In 1900, Jestin/Jane and part of her family were back in Grainger County TN. Jestin/Jane is believed to have died there about 1902. 1900 Grainger County Census ED27 Sheet 13: Jestin Shelton (head) dob: May 1841, widow, #children 7 living 3, born Tn. William Shelton (son) Nov. 1868, married, #yrs married 8, born Tn. Johnny D. Shelton (son) Aug. 1869, (widower ?), born Tn. Mattilda Shelton (daughter) 1875, married #yrs married 3, mother of 2 living 2, born Tn. *Harriet Majors (granddaughter) May 1889, single, born Tn. (married a Collins) Note that Jestin is a widow. We do not know who the husband for at least 5 additional children was, but it was not Mark Shelton who was still alive. Note Matilda claims two living children, but no children are listed for her unless the Harriet Majors is her child (illegimate?? ). Note William claims married 8 yrs., but has no wife or children listed. etc. It is believed that Jenstin/Jane died abt. 1902 in Grainger Co. TN.
