I may have contacted you before, but I am researching the surname PELTON. The thing that is complicated about it is that it is connected in my case to ADKINS and ATKINS. The information below explains this. The other complication is that on the census records I do have, most of the PELTONs have only initials. Please read and help if you can. You are welcome to anything I have. I have collected PELTON information from everywhere for 20 years. I have a list of the files if anyone needs to look at it or wants me to look anything up for them. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to look at all this. PELTON and Mary MCKAY C-169 PELTON, James C James C.PELTON and his wife Mary MCKAY; PELTON-raised a nephew of Mary's it was Robert L ADKINS, The boy's mother died in childbirth and his father died about the same time of Cholera. The family say they think the mother also had cholera, 1900 Census shows Robert L ADKINS living with his Uncle and Aunt in Mitchell County texas. The PELTONs let Robert keep his name of ADKINS. And because of this we were able to find him on the 1900 cottle count census, he was shown living with the PELTONs and was listed as nephew of the wife, and they considered him as their oldest child. they had 6 children in 1900, but a family member told me that they had somewhere around 14 children in all. But they always considered Robert Lee ADKINS their oldest child. he was born 1886 the same year that both his parents died. Because of the birth dates of the ADKINS and PELTON children, and especially the with the 1900 census that showed Robert S. ADKINS living with the PELTON family him listed as a nephew, seems to lend credibility to the story. More about Robert S Tom ADKINS aka ATKINS: Limestone Co, Texas Marriages Book A 1873-1876 R.S. PELTON b.1898-& Stuart H PELTON b 1899. Now the family story goes that Mary and Bell were pregnant at the same time. Mary had her baby and it died. Bell had her baby and then she and her husband Robert S. ADKINS both died of cholera. They buried Mary's dead baby with it's aunt Bell, and Mary took the live baby and raised him as her own. This baby was Robert L. "Bob" ADKINS. She let him keep his name of ADKINS, and on the 1900 census, it shows a Robert ADKINS listed as nephew of James C & Mary PELTON. Robert L. "Bob" ADKINS' sister, my grandmother, "Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" ADKINS was raised by her grandmother Susan HUDMAN MCKAY HENSON. Susan was a widow. I do not know date her husband Charles MCKAY died, but in 1880 when her sister Mary Ann HUDMAN HENSON died, she married her sister's widower husband Dr. Henry HENSON and they raised my grandmother, Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" ADKINS. I do not know who raised the other children, but some how they all grew to be adults.
