His brother was JOBY, not Jody. I am not sure that Maggie was a child of Ella. I believe that it was Jim who added the E to go from BURK to BURKE. Family lore is that it was on his marriage certificate that he first 'legally' signed his name, and that he declared then that he was going to use BURKE. His brother did the same. I wish I knew if Ella died or was divorced. Family lore is that Greenberry showed up at Jim's place on Caney Ridge. Jim threw him out, but Mattie, my maternal grandmother took him in and cared for him until he died. What impresses me is that three generations later, Greenberry's descendents still feel the loss of family. I wish I knew why he was married so many times, why he didn't care for his children....genealogy is so elusive. I am going "home" this July and I hope to root around the Wise County Courthouse.
