Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AJ.2ADIB/2562 Message Board Post: Newspaper Location - Sikeston, MO MOREHOUSE - Joseph Elvin Adkins, 83, died July 21, 2005, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston. Born Nov. 3, 1921, in Panama, Okla., son of the late Milem T. and Sarah Jane Anderson Adkins, he had been a resident of Morehouse since 1923 and was a retired farmer. He served in the U.S. Army Corps during World War II. On Nov. 20, 1942, in Grayridge, he married Esther Jewell McGuirt who preceded him in death on July 28, 2002. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Verlin Adkins. Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Polly Adkins of Portageville; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Freddie Copeland of Lilbourn; one sister, Opal Jackson of Norco, Calif.; and three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Morehouse where services will be at 10 a.m. Monday. The Rev. Bryan Smith of New Madrid will officiate. Burial will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery at Sikeston.

(Marriage records in Webster Co at that time didnt list parents names). Witnesses to marriage are Richard Adkins and J F (or JT) Adkins. Either may be her father. Born ca. 1862 (was 24 in May 1886). Any information appreciated.

I'm looking to pad my family tree on the Adkins side! These ancestors are all from Pike/Floyd Counties, Kentucky. My great great grandmother was Mary E. Adkins, born October 14, 1844 and died December 10, 1922. She married Ira R. Stephens. Mary's father was Elisha Adkins and her mother was Serena May Damron. I've also seen Rosanna Serena May. I have a boat-load of Adkins in my tree, and lots of common names, but no info that I can find so far to link Elisha with the rest. I thought I remembered years ago seeing his father as Winright Adkins. Winright is my ancestor, too, on another side! Does anyone recognize this family? I'd love to hear from you. Was married to Mandana Henderson and they lived in Monroe, Green Co., WI. when all their children were born between the years of 1848 and 1858. Mandana was on the 1860 mortality schedule in Green Co., and I believe Levi may have died there in 1884. Levi was supposed to have spent some of his childhood in PA. If I can find out Where in N.Y. he was born, or where in PA. he lived when young, it would sure help get past him and back into his parents lineage.

We have he was born ca. February 1848 and died November 1904, buried in Branchland, WV His wife at the time of his death was Sarah and they had 8 children together, the youngest not yet 1 year of age upon his death. He was much older than Sarah, so probably would have been married previously. I can find no records of him, other than his name on the death certificates of Sarah and some of his children. Any help appreciated, thanks.

He married ELLEN BUTTRAM Feb 1, 1867 in Scott Co. They had child MARY ETTA (or Ella) b. Jan 15, 1869. In 1870 Scott Co census, Ellen and Mary are with Ellen's parents. Ellen then becomes 1st wife of MOSES F HURTT (my g-grandfather) on Dec 22 1870. Ellen then passes away in 1883 after 3 children with Moses. Moses re-marries to Nancy E Goode, my g-grandmother. I have no clue if M L Adkins died bef 1870, or what. And only have the initials M L to work with. --Reed

Their mother was Parrazida Low. They are shown in the 1850 census in Scott county living in a household with John Adkins, Parasitta Adkins, Solomon Adkins (74 at the time, so may be John's father) Sary Adkins (13), Prier Adkins (10), Sherwood Adkins (8), Arthur Adkins (6), Martha Adkins (2) and Margarett Adkins (2). They were living on the same property as the Duncan family -- first name of husband looks like Charles. John may have been a tenant farmer. Pryor married Elizabeth Byrd before they left Tennessee for Missouri, Arkansas and, finally, Oklahoma. I don't know if this is your Sherwood's family or not, but it may give you a new start.
