Most of my line stayed further south. Though it is not impossible for there to be a connection, my understanding is that a lot of the Hargises in Kentucky were from another line that split off before the revolution.

Some of the other names I remember from her stories were John Hatfield, Jarvis,James Hargis, Owen and Jesse Adkins, Perkins, Upchurch, Chriswell, just to name a few, not to mention Burgess, Kurle, and Burton (the men the 3 sisters married). Do any of these names sound familiar?

This has all got to tie together somehow. My God, this is a mess! Some of the names my grandmother mentioned in her "life stories" were: James Hargis, John Hatfield, Owen Adkins, Jesse Adkins, John Burgess(Maggies husband), ?Abbott, Adams, Brumsfield, Plumley's, Upchurch, Cox, Jenkins, Chriswell and that's just to name a few! all of these clues have led me nowhere but if they can help anyone else I'm glad to share. I know that part of my Adkins family were from TN and I believe the "James Hargis" I'm referring to was from TN as was John Burgess the man my "Maggie" married. My Adkins family were moonshiners so they "travelled". I have pretty much given up on finding them "in the books". I'm pretty sure they avoided it well! My only clue has been a couple of them found in JAIL! Anyway if your people travelled in the same circles you might check there too. I think they all were a pretty compulsive bunch! I f can be of any help I will sure try.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AJ.2ADIB/2525.2.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Well, it is possible there could be a connection. I know that my Anna Adkins has been very difficult to track down--her line is a mess, as you said. I know that my prime candidate as her mother, Mary Burgess Alfred, married a man named Adkins after her marriage to Aaron Mcnew ended. I don't know if they had children, but I would guess they did. She would have been in her early 30's. I also know that this part of the family seemed to have a hard time controlling their reproductive urges. James and Anna's son Tom, my gGrandfather was quite the tomcat. I am still trying to identify all the children he fathered and the women involved. Mary, Anna's apparent mother, was illegitimate, and I doubt her marriage broke down over irreconcilable differences. People with young children didn't get divorced lightly in 1859. Are we talking about the same locations and times? Marion and Grundy Counties in Tennessee, late 1800's and early 1900's? With maybe some travel to northern Alabama or Georgia? I have two other James Hargises in my records. One born in 1831 and the other around 1912. Could either of them have been the James Hargis you are looking for?

    3. Hello, I have in my records a Mary Adkins who married John Truitt abt 1678. Mary was the daughter of Stanton and Elizabeth Adkins. John Truitt died in 1722 and Mary probably remarried. Does any one have a record of who she remarried....or evidence that she did not remarry? Also, does any one have an abstract or copy of her will? I am trying to recover names of grandchildren who someone has said are included in Mary's will. Any info concerning this family would be appreciated. Thanks, Nancy

    3. I believe it is "Sand Mountain Melungeon Families" and here is the link http://www.pantherslodge.com/sand.html Yes, this is the line from which I believe my William A.. Adkins , b. 1818 descends. Owen Adkins and his wife Agnes Goad were and some of their children were killed by Indians. I believe William descended from their son who was scalped, but survived. I think it was brother Benjamin Adkins who hid in a log to escape the massacre. My William A. Adkins married Adeline Tate, the daughter of Alfred C. Tate and Elizabeth McDonald/McDonnold. I have searched long for her Native American connection, but it eludes me. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Winnie J. Maggie had 2 sisters May and Wonnie Adkins. May is my great grandmother and she had my grandmother before she was married. My grandmother told me on more than one occation that she thought James Hargis was her real father, but he was somehow related through marriage to May. Thought she said he was May's uncle. Anyway, I'm still stuck on Adeline Adkins so I can't be of much help either but when I saw the name James Hargis in black and white it sent chills! Maggie was married to John Burgess and Wonnie was married to James Kurle. I know that my Adkins family line were moonshiners and were caught up in the Hatfield/McCoy thing and probably used aliases. I know that my ggg-grandmother was an Indian and alot of the Adkins family received Dawes Rolls because of her but I'm not even sure what her name was. All I have is a picture of her holding a squirell on her lap. Hope this helped but it probaly just confused you even m! ore. The Adkins line is a mess!!!!
