Bell MCKAY b. 1856 and Mary MCKAY b.1866 . Bell MCKAY married Robert S. ADKINS. Her sister married James C. PELTON. Robert S.ADKINS and Bell MCKAY had 4. children - Robert L. Bob ADKINS youngest of four children,b/1886, - Eleanor, ADKINS,- Mary Elizabeth ADKINS b. 1878. Her whole life she went by the name of Mollie, and was my grandmother. The fourth child was James S. ADKINS. b.1877 James C.PELTON married Mary MCKAY they had 6 children. James W. PELTON, b.1887-Joseph O. PELTON b.1889, Maggie M. PELTON b. 1893, and Susan M. PELTON b.1895- Samuel N. PELTON b.1898-& Stuart H PELTON b 1899. Now the family story goes that Mary and Bell were pregnant at the same time. Mary had her baby and it died. Bell had her baby and then she and her husband Robert S. ADKINS both died of cholera. They buried Mary's dead baby with it's aunt Bell, and Mary took the live baby and raised him as her own. This baby was Robert L. "Bob" ADKINS. She let him keep his name of ADKINS, and on the 1900 census, it shows a Robert ADKINS listed as nephew of James C & Mary PELTON. Robert L. "Bob" ADKINS' sister, my grandmother, "Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" ADKINS was raised by her grandmother Susan HUDMAN MCKAY HENSON. Susan was a widow. I do not know date her husband Charles MCKAY died, but in 1880 when her sister Mary Ann HUDMAN HENSON died, she married her sister's widower husband Dr. Henry HENSON and they raised my grandmother, Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" ADKINS. I do not know who raised the other children, but some how they all grew to be adults. This family story was written by Nettie Joan ORR NICLOS HERMAN My mother told this story many times and my Aunt Sophie, my mother's sister, told it also. At the time they were telling it I was young and did not pay much attention, but when I began doing genealogy and checking dates and census materials, it all came together. Because of the birth dates of the ADKINS and PELTON children, and especially the with the 1900 census that showed Robert S. ADKINS living with the PELTON family him listed as a nephew, seems to lend credibility to the story. On the 1910 census of Mitchell County, TX, Robert L. ADKINS is 23 years old which makes him born around 1887 depending on when the census was taken. Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" ADKINS is a first cousin to former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Samuel "Sam" TALIAFERRO RAYBURN b January 6, 1882 Roane County, Tennessee. Sam lived most of his life in Bonham, Fannin County, Texas. Children of ISABELLE MCKAY and ROBERT ADKINS are: i. JAMES S3 ADKINS, b. August 12, 1876; d. June 12, 1958; m. There was alot going on in Oklahoma at the time that the 40 families (mostly Adkins, and relatives of Adkins) rented a train about 1905 and headed to Oklahoma. There were promises of land being given to settlers, and land/money being given to Indians, so that may have been what drew them to the area. > > Let me know what you find out. > > Thanks! > > Linda > > ==== ADKINS Mailing List ==== > To discover the meaning of your name, check out The Name Center: > http://www.TheNameCenter.com

I know that he married in 1900 to a woman named Nancy Ann Montgomery, and they had quite alot of children. Some of the names are Kearny, Charlie, Clyde, Tillie, Gladys. I have recently found out that Kearny was born in Oklahoma, Carter County, in 1907. In 1910, they were back in Magoffin County, where they appear on the census. My grandmother, Gladys was born there in 1913, but the family disappears from KY after that. I am wondering if Nancy had died and Ed remarried, and returned to Oklahoma with her? Do you have other details, when Ed and the wife you mentioned married? Do you know if he had previously been married? My mother states that when she was about 17, that Ed Adkins moved (alone, at about the age of 80) near where she was living in Ohio. I assume he died there. Do you know the death place of your Ed Adkins? Thanks for the info, I hope we can link this Ed.... although it's a long shot. Linda
