A Tennessee Archives researcher recently sent me copies of the 1815 Robertson Co., TN, probate records for John Howell. The only record on film was an inventory of his estate dated 12 May 1815 that was returned to the Aug. 1815 Term of the Robertson County Court for recording. I have seen elsewhere that John Howell's probate records also include 4 bond records and an estate sale, but I don't have these yet. Some of the key learnings were: - No land or house was included in the inventory, indicating that they were left to John Howell's widow. - John Howell and Daniel Hartan (Springfield resident) were partners in the firm of Howell & Hartan. - A Herbert Howell is the only other Howell named. - Those named in debt notes & accounts to John Howell were: James Tunstall, Thomas Marley, Robert Talar (dec'd), T. Hanley, Plummer Willis, T. Flood, R. C. Prolust(?), H. Johnson, Thomas B. Tunstall, Jack Ragsdale, G. G. (George) Cunningham, W. S. Bradburn, Thos. Lane, P. Darby, E. T. Parris, Charles Murphy, P. Darby, Robert Tiatt. - Total estate value was $1286.87 - The administrator of John Howell's estate was William Adams. The administrator, William Adams, is LIKELY the same William Adams whose Robertson Co., TN, will was written on 8 Aug 1827. David Corlew's transcription of William Adam's will can be seen at the USGenWeb Robertson Co., TN, Wills web page link below: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tn/robertson/wills/adams01.txt David Corlew also posted a transcription of the 30 May 1829 Robertson Co., TN, will for Sarah Adams, the widow of William Adams, at the following link: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tn/robertson/wills/adams02.txt Sarah Adam's will names daughters Nancy Co**raill and Susannah Augbourn who are not named in her husband's earlier will, probably because they were daughter's from her prior marriage. I believe that Susannah is LIKELY my ancestor, Susan A. Howell who married Josiah D. Ogburn on 24 Dec 1818 in TN before settling in adjacent Montgomery Co., TN, where all of their children were born. My ancestor, John Howell Ogburn, was b. 25 Oct 1819. His oldest sister, Sarah Ann Ogburn was b. 25 Jan 1821. I'm guessing that these oldest son & daughter were named to honor the parents of Susan (Howell) Ogburn, John & Sarah Howell of Robertson Co., TN. Josiah Ogburn's 4 Oct 1829 will in Montgomery Co., TN names his wife Susan Ogburn and his 7 children. Below is a link to my RootsWeb World Connect database page which includes my transcription of his will: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=kmcmahan&id=I5698 Three daughters that were named in William Adams' will were Martha H. Barry, Rebecca Binkley and Dorothy D. Yeats. Databases of Edwin Ferrell and Sara Binkley Tarpley have, respectively, Martha H. Adams (b. 3 Nov 1796 in Dinwiddie Co., VA) and Rebecca Adams (b. 4 Jan 1801 in Dinwiddie Co., VA) as the daughters of William Adams. But, Susannah HOWELL (no other data) is given as Martha's mother and Sarah ? (no other data) is given as Rebecca's mother. Sarah Adams' will also names daughters Dorothy Yates & Rebecca Binkly. If Mrs. Sarah Adams was really Rebecca's mother, she could not be the widow of John Howell who probably died about 1814. David Corlew has learned that daughter Dorothy D. Adams is said to have been b. 28 Oct 1800 in VA to William Adams. Her birth year is questionable as it precedes that of Rebecca Adams by only about 3 months. I hope to be sent copies of the 1809 probate papers for Abner Howell in Robertson Co., TN, soon. I'm also hopeful that we can achieve some synergy by combining the above info with the research of others.
