At least, I haven't found them. Possilby the oldest man came in 1849 from the North and he and Kit Carson apparently dropped out and didn't go that year. It was a John Adams. I have heard they went to CA first. Two were Cornelisons and they settled in Susanville, and one later met with Peter Lassen to form a county government (Wiley Cornelison). Wiley's uncle went on to Oregon and married into the Adams group. Wiley and his father are on the 1850 census in Taney County, as I recall. My great gram was the Adams, so we wouldn't have any of that unbroken line Adams DNA. They took an 1854 Wagon Train from Independence Mo to Napa CA. Rather precarious, I would guess! The migrations before that, after Virginia, were to Hopkinsville, Christian Co, Kentucky to Madison CO KY, then on to Howard County, MO from approximately 1829 until they made their way West. In Howard County, MO, four Adams siblings (Thomas, Polly, Andrew and Wilson Hicks Adams, my ancestor) and spouses had neighboring farms. Cousins must have all known each other. Only Thomas made it to the West. It was he who lived to age 94, and quite sharp, I have heard. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. NC and VA. Have you done any DNA? Our James Adams was born abt 1799 (according to his kids census), in TN. Of course TN was not a state yet so it would actually have been NC. He married Catherine Thomas b. abt 1801 in NC. We have not determined if that was really her maiden name but think it was. They went in 1837 from KY up through the Gap to Ray County MO. They called their new home Buncombe but changed it soon to Knoxville which it still is to this day.I have the book that tells of the wagon train they went on. It says they went with Yoakum, VanBibber, Kincaid,Thomas, McGlothlin, and Adams. My hubby did DNA and only tied in with one James Asa Adams line from NC. If I remember correctly James Asa was born abt 1830 in Forcythe or Alamance counties in NC. Just across the NC border from VA. There are a lot of this line there still. THe DNA match lives in VA.His name is Van Adams and his sister is Bea Adams King. Our James had his first son abt 1824 in NC and named him John Quincy, then Samuel Madison, Thomas Jefferson,Barsheba, Henry Clay, Cleopatra Anne, Benjamin Franklin and several others. 5 were born in NC the rest in MO. Just curious... Rose Adams in CA. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I don't know if he fits our James or not but I thought I would send the history for you to see. Adams Family Genealogy by Velma Ann Rogers Tower Adams Family The Adams side of my family came from Tn. I think it was around 1830 could be a little later. They came from Shelby and Hardeman Counties . They left Sommerville, Tn. In a wagon train headed for Thayer , Mo. At Wilderness, Mo. They ran into an Indian ambush and took captive an Indian girl named Horsespence (probably a corruption of Hortense). I have no idea as to what happened to her but in the findal roll of the Five Civilized Tribes there are Adams listed. Wilderness is a little northeast of Thayer and up in the mountains. It is listed on just a few of these later maps. The wagon trains had to follow the trails or roads and they were sometimes very winding due to terrain. There were few man made roads in those days. They started out toward their destination and followed the easiest terrain to get there. It was easier to go miles out of their way than to go over obstacles. I have assumed that Great Grandpa Jacob Adams married in Mo., but he could easily have married in Tn. Then have moved West. Mary Adams of Springfield , Mo., helped find him in the 1840 and 1850 cenus ( see Census Sheet). There were children that I never had heard of, just how he met my Great Granmother american Ann nee Cook, Elliott, I don't know. He had children and she had children. My Grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth, was American Ann's child. My Granfather J.A. Adams was Jacob's child. Shether they were in love or were thrown into close proximity and thought they were in love is anybodys guess. Their marriage was not a good one. Grandpa was, possibly , too young; anyway the hum-drum chore of providing for a family weighed heavily on him. He rebelled by wandering. When he grew tired of wandering, he would drop in at home and assume his duties as head of the family. When he was gone, Grandma and the children had to fend ofr themselves as best they could. After six children and another on the way, he wandered again. One night , soon after Uncle Orvis was born, he decided to come home again. Grandma and the little children were sitting around the fire when she heard the gate click. She got up and locked the door. She used to tell it this way, "Alec knocked on the door. I asked, who is it?" He said , "Let me in." I said " Just keep on traveling." He said, "Sary, Let me in." I said , " You're not coming in. Everytime you come home, you go off and leave me with another baby to take care of and I have all that I can say Grace over. I'll never spend another night under the same roof with you." Grandpa said, " Marthy, let Pa in. " Marthy said, "Go away old mean Pa. You went off and left me and I don't love you anymore.!" Grandpa left. When I was a little girl (1913), he came to visit, but when he went to visit Uncle Jake, Grandma came to our hourse. She never forgave him. She raised her family and after Uncle Jake's wife, Tin! ey Combs, died, she kept house for him and raised Opal and Norman. She also helped raise us. Uncle John went to get her during the 1930's but she refused to leave him. Grandma had a very hard life. She gave Uncle Will to Uncle Bill. He was Uncle Bill's anesake and Uncle Bill wanted him. I guess that was the most painful thing that she ever did. She never got over it, but she thought that he would have a better life with Uncle Bill. I think that Uncle Will had a deep seated hurt about it too. Grandpa married twice after that and had a son by his second wife and three or four by his third wife. Leonard Adams, the son of his second wife, came to see us once with his family and Grandma loved him. Aunt Mary Adams said that Grandpa died in 1918 at Snyder, Okla. I have been unable to get a death certificate. Bethel has good memories of him. I just remember him as a blue serge suit with gold watch chain across his vest and smelling like tobacco. Papa didn't use tobacco and the scent offended my nostrils. Adams Genealogy by Velma Ann Rogers Tower Generation Jacob Adams The first proven ancestor is Jacob Adams and his wife Mary (surname unknown) who left a will, naming most of his children, that was probated in Patrick Co. Va. On the 27th day of Oct. 1807. The will of Jacob names eight children. Mary who married #1 Christopher Cooper and #2 Richard Hancock was not named in the Will. He had probably given to her at the time of her first marriage. (In orginal, she was named.) Soon after the finalizing of Jacob's will in Patrick County Va., the majority of his children migrated to Tn. And settled in Wilson County. Jacob Jr. settled the part of Wilson Co. Tn. That later became Smith and Cannon Co. Rufus Dennis wrote a rambling but interesting account of this migration and settling. He made some mistakes such as calling some of the children of Jacob and Mary by different given names, but this may have been due to faulty memory or the habit of calling people by their second given name and using the first for legal documents. Lela Mae Turner Shaw who descended through the Jacob Jr. Line uses the names given in the will of Jacob of Patrick Co. Va. Rufus Dennis gives more children for Jacob Jr. that does Shaw but again this might be that Shaw didn't know about the other children. Children of Jacob and Mary of Patrick Co. Va. Va. Francis Nowlin signed as surety. I have assumed that he wan an older brother to Biddy, at least a close relative. He spelled Nowlin as Biddy spelled Nowlin. Francis Nowlin married Sally Shelton 19 Feb. 1801 in Patrick Co. Va. Archibald Shelton signed as surety. He married again 21 March 1818 to Polly Harbor. Elum Newman signed as Surety. William and Biddy probably went to Wilson Co. Tn. In 1809 when Jacob Jr. and so many other kinsmen and friends migrated down the Nickajack (Indian trail) Trail. Jacob Jr. and other mentioned in the Dennis Report settled in what is now 1888 Smith and Cannon Co. William had land holdings in Wilson Co. When he died. His will was filed in Nov. 1831 for probate in Wilson Co. Tn. The will was written in Feb. 1831. He mentioned the following in his will, his wife Biddy, three sons, Greenberry, who did not inherit and the three who did inherit, James, Jacob and Leroy. He also willed to three daughter, Miletha, Charlotte C. and Eliza. In April 1832 Jacob, Green, and James sold one hundred and thirteen acres of the land that William owned at his death. I assume that the rest of the land went to creditors and in 1833 Biddy and her unmarried children, Leroy, Charlotte, and Eliza and I think most of the married children and others including Benjamin Cummins and family made another move to Green Co. Mo. Where they were able to buy land for $1.25 per acre. This was before the Homestead Law and they probably lived on the land three or four years before the Springfield Land Office was opened for recording. We need to remember that Biddy was between 60 and 70 years of age and a primitive trip from Wilson Co. Tn. To Green Co. Mo. had to be exhausting. She must have had unusual strength and stamina. >From the History of Patrick and Henry Co. Va. By Lewis and Virginia Pedigo (Published in Baltimore by Regional Publishing Co. 1977) we find this little excerpt on the name of Nowlin-- Page 205-The name of Nowlin was originally O'Naulain, the O in Gaelic signifying son of. This was corrupted O'Nolan, O'Nowlin, then Nowlin and in Va. Nowlin. Three brothers, whose names were James, John, and William, came to Va. From Ireland in about 1700. James remained in Va., the others moving to other states. (It goes on to mention the name of the John Nowlin family. Adams Genealogy by Velma Ann Rogers Tower Generations 1-Jacob and Mary 2-William 3-Jacob 3-3-s. Jacob Adams, probably the third son of William and Biddy Nowlin, was born 1812-14 in Wilson Co. Tn. We think that he married Charlotte Cummings in Tn. Before the family migrated to Green Co. Mo. After the death of William, Biddy and her sons settled the estate and moved to Mo. where they could buy land for $1.25 per acre. According to land records most of her children moved with her around 1833. Two girls are listed in the 1840 Census. Another daughter was in William's Will. As of 1988 I do not have information the third daughter. It is possible that she married and stayed in Tn. She may have died. Charlotte was the daughter of Benjamin Cummings. So he had in his household 4 of his sisters children (Martha Ann Adams Rogers) ,two of his own, and his ageing mother Sarah Elizabeth. I don't think you can say enough about the generous heart Jacob had . He also came to Boynton, Oklahoma and got my grandmother after her husband Henry Logan died and brought her into his home with the four children. She then 6 months later died of childbirth and complications of pneumonia after giving birth to a stillborn son Leland. The medicine the Doctor gave her was to strong and killed the baby. She was born in Taney County Missouri and grew up there. I'm not sure how much schooling she had but she received it in Taney County and was able to read well and write and spell do arithmetic. She was married at a very early age, so I feel sure that her schooling was limited. Grandma Sarah Elizabeth said that she knew that papa, Henry Logan Roers, son of Aruther Rogers and Alcy Lawson, had come to ask for Marthy's hand when she saw him walking in the gate. The account of their marriage says that her mother gives consent. After Grandpa divorced grandma to marry Louella B ass of Washingto County Arkansas, grandma assumed full responsibility for her children, except for Uncle Will who went to live with Great Uncle Bill for whom he was named. I found that the wagon train our Adams likely came on arrived in the Columbia Gorge, not the Southern route. It was 1850. They may also have been in California first. One of the young men (John Weaver) overwintered in Cornelius and his mother was Anna Adams. They had been in Taney County, Missouri for a few years before leaving for the West, Kentucky, Tennessee and Botetourt County, Virginia before that.
