I don't know why I didn't check all that. I could have, just didn't. Did you notice on the last one they had William Robert instead of Robert William? Are you connected to this family at all? I am doing this for a friend of mine. It's been fun to do. I have reached a point on my own family and my husband's that I have to do lots of filing and writing and this was more fun to do. LOL! I noticed on Frank M he had a wife and child. I am trying to find him in Morgan County in 1920. He shows Brick --something precinct and tha'ts not an option when you run the census. I've seen that before but can't remember where I saw it. Maybe in an earlier census. I'm going to look again. Thanks for your help.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/CI.2ADEB/9328.1.2.1.1 Message Board Post: Actually, there's nothing here that rules out Francis marrying twice and just being unaccounted for in the 1880 census (just for the time being, hopefully). The message posted to the ADAMS-L list only and not to the message board by Valerie Brooks is the only one that doesn't appear to be the same Francis Adams (born later and Francis doesn't have a son by that name that we're aware of yet). Here's how I've got it in my mind that this all could be the same guy: Francis is born Oct 1829 (birthdate from 1900 census- thanks Sharon!), marries Sophia Scott in Nov 1850, they have 2 kids between 1850 and 1860 that are listed on 1860 census. The William Payton in the home in 1860 is likely the son of Francis' sister, Serena Adams Payton (spelled PATEN in Francis' father's will, also seen spelled PEYTON, PATTEN- but I digress). In 1870, Francis is not in the home with Sophia and their now 4 kids (note that Mary F.(Fanney) is now simply F. Adams and Sarah E.(Elizabeth) is now E. Adams, and her age should be 12, not 2- the census takers were supposed to list children in age order, and 12, not 2, would support this- missed pen stroke by the enumerator or deterioration of the writing, possibly- things like that happen fairly often. As for the Franklin Adams living nearby, check his age and place of birth and see if they are consistent with the entries we've seen for Francis- he is listed as Franklin M. Adams in the 1850 census, Cedar Twp, Bo! one County. If Francis and Sophia divorced, he just might be living nearby as you stated, Mary, and I'm curious- is this Franklin living alone or in someone else's household? Anyway, we've gotten through the marriage to Sophia Scott, all children born before 1870. Now in Sept 1870 Francis marries Ellen Potter, and they start having kids of record in 1872. 1880 comes, and Francis' first wife Sophia is living with ALL her grown children in the home of their daughter Sarah Elizabeth Coleman and husband William Coleman. Ellen Potter Adams and children are living with Ellen's parents, but, like we're all asking about now, where in tarnation is Francis/Franklin/Whoever? And is Ellen really listed as single in 1880? The LDS census household page indicates as such. We don't find Francis again until 1900, this time listed as Frank M. Adams, but still in Moniteau County, and listed as a widower, and Ellen is listed as widowed also? The only explanation that comes to mind for "! Frank" to be listed as a widower is that maybe he's ditched his second wife, too, and is referring to first wife Sophia when stating he's a widower. That's just speculation, however, as I don't have a death date for Sophia- oh well, just something else to look for. So it is possible that this Francis/Franklin/Frank was the husband of both these ladies, and father to all those kids. Thanks, Sharon, for the additional census info! This has given us some new avenues to try to verify or disprove! I haven't had this much new info at once in many moons! Speaking of many moons, Francis' mother, Elizabeth or Betsy, was reputed to be a Cherokee, but we've got no proof, just the story of the "Indian Grandma" that came down through my family, and my wife's as well, before we found out we shared James and Betsy Adams as common ancestors. Curiouser and curiouser...

    1. Frances M. Adams b. 1859 in MO
    2. Valarie Brooks
    3. Greetings! My Frances M.(M = Marion)Adams was born 6 December 1859 in Missouri. He married IcyDora (Isadora, Dora) Freeman, who was born 9 July 1857 in Murphysborough, Coffee Co., Tennessee. They were married in 1879 in Glen Rose, Texas, and both of them died in Kimble County, Texas. I have several pictures of both of them and one with all of their children, as well. I have their children as follows: Lula Allie John W. b. 25 June 1880/d. 26 March 1931 Dave G. b. 1882/d. 1930 Sarah Laura b. 23 Feb 1886/d. 13 Feb. 1963 (this is my g-gmother) Arthur S. b. 27 Feb 1890/d. 13 June 1944 Frank b. 18 June 1892/d. 6 July 1900 I was wondering: My great aunts have told me that our FM Adams was very involved in the Masonic Lodge, and he traveled around Texas initiating (or whatever the word is, my apologies to any Masons for my ignorance!) men into the Masonic Rite. Do the Masons keep any records that old? Would they be open to letting me copy them, if they do? It was just an angle I hadn't thought of before! 3. Tmary, In 1930, my mother was the census enumerator for an area close to where we lived. I have a copy of all the pages. Included was a camp of men who were working on the railroad. They were mostly from other states. Perhaps they were a crew that went from place to place to work. Your Adams could have been a member of a similar group of men who were away from home some of the time. Maxine

Their first child was born abt 1872. I have the marriage license. I have one of the sons death certificate which shows he was born in Idaho (although all the census show he was born in Missouri) I figured Francis would have to be in the area at least near the time he was married. The 1870 census for Morgan County was taken in August and the marriage occured in September. The only close one I could find was a Franklin Adams living close by. Francis was not with the family in 1880. Ellen is living with her father, again in Morgan County, with four children. In 1900 she is listed as a widow but has had three more children. All children have the last name of Adams. The death certificate of Samuel is one of the children that was born in the later time period. He was born in 1883. How can Francis dissapear? I checked all the surrounding counties because the Potter family and the Cramer's were in Co! oper and Pettis Counties also, along with Adams. They are all in the family. There was a lot of Railroad construction in both counties, tons of people, I still have a few townships to go through in Pettis County. I do it page by page. I did all of Morgan and did all of Cooper. I don't even have a clue how old this Francis was. I can't connect him to the one Gary said lived in Boone County unless he dumped his wife with the kids and married Ellen, or married twice at the same time and kept both. I guess anything is possible.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/CI.2ADEB/9328.1.1.1 Message Board Post: I'm not sure where Francis was in 1880, either. It appears that he married a Sophia Ann Scott on Nov 26, 1850, but there are postings on the LDS website listing 1857 and Nov 26, 1866 as marriage dates. I don't think the 1866 is correct, because the 1880 census shows a Sophia Adams living in Moniteau County, MO in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, William and Sarah Elizabeth Coleman. Also in the house are Sophia's children Fanney, Alice, and William Adams, and the age for Fanney (24) would put her birthdate around 1856 or so. The LDS webpage transcription does not show a marital status for any of the Adamses, and I don't have access to the census image, so that's a mystery to me. Check your personal e-mail, I'm sending an image of a transcription of the will of Francis' father James, with notes added by a researcher unknown to me.
