    1. ADAMS Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Helen M. ADAMS which was taken at the N. Smith Gallery in Sandwich, Illinois. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1870's with Helen likely in her 30's at the time it was taken. In addition to her name someone has also written "Darius' 2nd wife, died 15 June 1873" on the back of the photograph. Based on limited research and thanks to the assistance of an ADAMS Family researcher, I believe that this is a photograph of Helen M. SPENCER ADAMS who was the second wife of Darius ADAMS. Darius ADAMS was the son of Augustus & Lydia ADAMS who were living in Sandwich, IL during the 1860 census with records providing the following information regarding the family: Augustus ADAMS, age 57, born NY, a Machinist Lydia ADAMS, age 47, born NY, House Keeper Darius ADAMS, age 25, born NY, a Bookkeeper John ADAMS, age 21, born NY, a Machinist Raymond ADAMS, age 18, born IL, an Engineer Oliver ADAMS, age 15, born IL Eleanor ADAMS, age 14, born IL Walter ADAMS, age 10, born IL Charles ADAMS, age 6, born IL Hermoine AMES, age 18, born LA, a Housekeeper Susannah PHELPS, age 72, born NY, retired Hubert CARNES, age 27, born PA, a Moulder Martin AMES, age 21, born LA, a Day Laborer In 1870 I find Darius ADAMS and his family living in Somonauk, IL with census records providing the following info: Darius ADAMS, age 35, born NY, a Machinist Spencer ADAMS, age 22, born IL, Keeping House Hattie ADAMS, age 7, born IL Lye ADAMS, age 5, born IL (female) Augustus ADAMS, age 1, born IL Lena FANCLIN, age 20 I believe that Spencer is actually Helen M. indicated by her maiden name and that only the youngest child Augustus is her own. It is believed that Helen had only the one child and as the notation on the photograph states would have died just a few years after this census was recorded. I'm hoping to locate someone from Helen's family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to its rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

The father was George Adams of Watertown Mass. 1640. He had many children, of which three brothers moved to Windsor Ct in 1680's. Part of that line lived in Simsbury, CT. I have found a Hiram Adams (Middle initial I must look up) buried in Tarriffville, CT just southwest of the Hartford CT Airport on the map. ( old St Andrews Cemetary ) Part of this Adams Line moved to NYC. This may or may not help you. Your first step may be to contact directly the Simsbury, Ct genelogical office. I believe they will have birth & death records on a Hiram Adams line. I estimate dates around 1800-1850. If dates match you may have a strong connection here. Look forward to hearing about what you might learn, Regards, Peter C. Adams 4/14

Surnames: Adams, Van Pelt Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/CI.2ADEB/9432.1.1 Message Board Post: Thanks for the message. This Hiram Adams is an enigma. He is not listed with his family in the 1870 census and cannot be located in the 1860 census. His wife, Mary Van Pelt, was born c1838, in Brooklyn or Staten Island, more likely Brooklyn. Hiram last known child, William, was born in 1865-1866, so Hiram Sr. must have died between 1865-1870. There is no information on his birthdate or age, although there is an unconfirmed story that he originally came from Massachusetts, possibly Barnstable. When his son Hiram Minard Adams was married in 1879 it is noted that Hiram Sr. is no longer living, and the father's name is shown as Hiram W. Adams. When Hiram M. remarried in 1889, his father's name is recorded as H. W. Adams. To the best of our knowledge the Adams family lived only in the WIlliamsburgh section of Brooklyn; they are there in 1858, 1870 and in later years. Hiram W. married Mary Ven Pelt presumably prior to the birth of their oldest child Jane in 1855-1856. That's as mu! ch as is known about Hiram W.
