    1. Re: [ADAMS-L] Adams from PA to Ohio/WV/Ind/Kansas

    3. To Judy - Thanks for your information. I haven't ruled out that my Hugh Adams' father might also be named Hugh, and I have also searched for David because Hugh's first son was named David. Tobias runs in the family, but it may come from the Cooper side. Several censuses show Hugh born in PA so I think that must be right. The years when he might have been with parents are those before every name was listed and without knowing how many siblings I can't even guess at this point. He is a complete dead end unless I can find a definite match with somebody that has more information than I do. John Adams born 1802, married 1826 could be of the right age, but would they have gone to PA thereafter? I have my Hugh's descendants - not all of their spouses or children though. Hugh and Lucinda were in Indiana by 1870 and Kansas by about 1886. Does this match anybody? 3. Hi, Sue - Your James is of an age to be a sibling of my Hugh. Did James come directly from Ireland himself? Some of Hugh Adams' in-law family, the Coopers, were apparently residing in Wheeling around the beginning of the Civil War, and they are rumored to have come from Washington Co. Pa., so there are definite similarities. I am only speculating that the Coopers and Adamses came from PA together but many families did move together then. The Adams family story is that they originally came from Wales, but I have no more information on that. We might see if there are other common names, dates, places, and perhaps I can look in some additional places for my Adamses and Coopers. The Coopers also married into the Way family and many of them were in Tyler and Pleasants Co. WV. When my Adams and Coopers were in Tyler Co. they lived in/near Sistersville which is just across the river from Monroe County. It certainly could be a possibility. It would be great to be able to tie some of these people to someone else! Let me know if I can give you any other details and I'd be happy to know what else you may have. 1. Re: [ADAMS-L] SC Adams
    2. Janean Ray
    3. No I haven't. My John A. Adams d. between 1870/1880 in Texas. I can only "assume" same place his wife did, in Sherman Tx Grayson Co. Actually I could attempt his brother's d/c. I haven't tried that. William J. Adams d. 26 June 1854 in White Co. IL Other brother Archibald d. 1887 in Illinois. He married 5 Nov. 1856 and my info says White Co. IL but no proof to that. The 1850 SC census states he was living with his brother John prior to his marriage so not sure that he actually married in White Co. IL my 2nd great grandmother was born in SC in 1850 and her sister (next in line) was born 1855 in White Co. IL So based on William's death in '54 - the birth of John's daughter in '55 and Archibalds marriage in '56 I would venture a guess they left SC about '51-'53. Only discrepancy is with William. I have him dead 26 June 1854 in White Co. IL but the birth of his last child 10 Oct. 1854 in Chester S.C. Two children prior but no locations for their births nor a location for their marriage in 1847.... His last child d. 2 Dec. 1919 in Arkansas. Someone gave me Bradford Jackson Arkansas. However Bradford is in White Co. AR not Jackson Co. AR. I have not explored Civil War records as of yet so not sure how to go about that or where. 1. Re: [ADAMS-L] obit of Margaret Adams, Indiana, PA Nov. 14, 1900
    2. Was hoping if there were any descendents of Margaret Adams on the list, they might find something familiar in my Indiana Pa Adams line information. Received the information going back to grt grt grandma Anne Jane Adams Allshouse including her death and burial from a relative. When she became ill I took over the search. The saga of where Lydia and the two girls were buried was a difficult one to unravel. Family story told how grt grt grandmother spoke of how she was put in a strawn strewn room along with my Grt grt grt grandmother Lydia Adams and two other daughters (names we did not know) who died of smallpox in 1845 in the West Ward Pittsburgh. Were buried in the Methodist burying ground (where Union station now stands) that was later moved. The family lived with stories of the bones being dug up and used as gravel along the rail road tracks, then of them being used as mortar between the bricks to build the station wall when it expanded. This story bothered me so much especially since I could not get corroboration that it ever existed. I spent 20 years searching for it whenI finally located an 1852 map of land that had been appropriated for Union Station. Then researching translated German newspapers thanks to a wonderfully generous gentleman in Pittsburgh, to find where the reburials were moved to. In visiting Allegheny Cemetery concerning the reburials we only located a single Adams, a child named Amanda Adams among the reburials in Section 29, plot # 1 is single interments from the Methodist cemetery that had been on Liberty St. I was told by the cemetery that often whole families were moved with only one headstone and reburied together. While I have been told by several experts that this is what had to have happened, this hasn't been proven for Lydia and her daughters yet. The only information they had on Amanda Adams is that she was 5 years 2 months 13 days old. No death date, burial date, or information about any family. It took me several more years to locate proof of a Small Pox outbreak in Pittsburgh during the winter of 1845 - 1846. Having the family story of Anne Jane Adams Allshouse being placed in a straw strewn room with and watching her mother Lydia Adams and two sisters die of small pox in 1845. I had searched for information on possible small pox epidemics in the past and never found anything for 1845. Found a sister Catherine E Adams Murray Oct 31 1839 - Aug 26 1921 from Catherines affidavit for Anne Janes application for Finleys Civil War pension. Inresearching Catherine I found out her daughters signed as a witness on that affidavit. Found a death date for Lydia on familysearch.com of Dec 10th 1845. Then found a couple of references on the Historic Pittsburgh site: Standard History of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania / edited by Erasmus Wilson. Chicago : H.R. Cornell & Co., 1898. 1074 p. : ports. ; 26 cm. Page 623 "winter of 1845-6 many cases of small pox appeared here. I wondered where Lydias children have been educated in the West Ward. I have found minimal information about a West Ward "Free" school, (sometimes called the pauper school) opened in 1838, school house was a 3 story brick building on Ferry St between 4th and Liberty, and was in use til approx 1847, a Mr & Mrs Creighton were in charge of it. Female Dept was taught by a Miss Emaline A Evans with 120 students. Who were taught - orthography, reading, penmanship, arithmetic, geography, grammar, plain and variegated needle work etc... This information was located on a search of the Historic Pittsburgh site for West Ward School. Had also been referred to AIS for records, but they had nothing but the same references. My daughter and I went to the LDS family history center here in Florida. With the help we received from the gal overseeing the center, finally found more children for Samuel and Lydia in baptisms for the dead with information provided by Anne Jane. Husband Samuel Adams born Feb 23, 1811 Indiana Co Pa. died - April 11, 1887 we do not know where yet. Wife Lydia Ostander Adams born about 1820 Jefferson. Pa. died Dec 10, 1845 Pittsburgh Pa Children: Sarah Rebecca Adams b. 22 May 1838 of,, Armstrong, Pa d. 05 Dec 1913 George W. Adams b. 16 Jul 1843 of,, Indiana, Pa d. 06 Dec 1861 Mary Adams b. 20 Nov 1845 of,, Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pa d. 31 Dec 1845 Ann Jane Adams Allshouse b. 20 Nov 1836 , Indiana Pa. Married Jan 14, 1856 Finley Allshouse ME Church Irwin (1837 - 1901) Died April 12, 1923 in Johnson Hotel California Pa. Phillipsburg Cemetery (Section B Row #14 Allshouse, Ann Jane 1836 - 1923 next to her husband Finley) Date of Burial was April 15, 1923 Undertaker James E Hines Address Coal Center Pa. So I had found the information on one sister Catherine E Adams Murray. A possible sister in the Amanda found at Allegheny Cemetery. Mary looked good for the name of the other daughter who died with Lydia as per Anne Janes story about two sisters dying with their mother, since the death dates are 21 days apart. George looked like he is a likely candidate for having died in the Civil War, found some information which was corroborated with what another researcher found on ancestry.com George Adams , Enlistment Date: 12 October 1861 Distinguished Service: DISTINGUISHED SERVICE Side Served: Union State Served: Pennsylvania Unit Numbers: 2345 2345 Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 12 October 1861 Enlisted in Company B, 78th Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania on 12 October 1861. Died Company B, 78th Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania on 08 December 1861 in Camp Negley, KY In researching the outfit, I found that many soldiers died there around that time, not in battle, but from diseases due to the intolerable living conditions. Am hoping to find out where he is buried from his miliary records. Also hope his records will mention parents and siblings. George was listed as the #1 Volunteer of Co.B of the 78th Regiment. Beside him are two other boys named John B. Adams and Thomas B. Adams No#2 & No#3. They all enlisted at the same time. While George Adams in these records is listed as died. The others suffered disabilities and were discharged early, more likely with disease. Am hoping to find information about John B., and Thomas B Adams being related, brothers or possibly cousins? 1. George Adams of Rockingham Co., NC
    2. Ed Adams
    3. I sent the below message a few days ago but it has never come through. Will send again. Looking for information on George Adams. In 1790 he is found on the Stokes Co., NC census. In 1800 he is in Rockingham Co., NC. On May 10, 1802 he left a will with Hanson Humphreys as the Executor. Witnesses, John Byson, James Taylor, Thomas Leachman and James Leachman. The will list the following children: William Adams; James Adams; George Adams; Thomas Adams; Peggy Wisnor/Wisenor/Wisner, Francis Adams and grandsons; James Adams and Person Adams. I know that Thomas Adams and wife, Ann Vaughn Adams and Peggy Wisnor/Wisenor/Wisner and husband, Henry Wisnor/Wisenor left Rockingham Co., NC and was in Williamson Co., TN by 1799. Thomas Adams' children left Williamson Co., TN about 1816 for Giles Co., TN and then on to Lauderdale Co., AL by about 1820. For more information, please see my web site at the address below. Will be happy to share information. ----------------------- Ed Adams See My Home Page at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~adams1895

    2. Judy, I have a James Adams born about 1832 in OHio. HIS father was the one born in Ireland, and also named James Adams. My James Adams, born in OHio, had a son named William also, along with a Marshal, David, Ellsworth, Ruth, Sarah L, and Oda Jane. Their mother was Hannah Sykes, a cousin of Louis Wetzel that we all read about and study in history class when we research pioneers. Sue

    1. Re: [ADAMS-L] Tall Adams - with Tennessee, Kentucky or Missouri roots
    2. Dan, Our ancestor was Sarah Jane Adams, who married at Marysville, Benton County, Oregon in 1851 and later moved to Myrtle Creek, Oregon - Douglas County. In Myrtle Creek were John Adams, born about 1774, I believe, in Virginia and his son, John Adams, Jr. Also, Henry Adams who was related to the other Adams men. They came to Myrtle Creek about 1851. Although I have found articles about these three men, they do not mention the specific names of any females. Another Adams in Myrtle Creek was Elizabeth Adams. She married Isaac Bailey (of the extremely tall Bailey family). I have been collecting information about all five of the people above. I cannot find anything definitely linking the two women to the men. Sarah was listed on the probate of Elizabeth, but then scratched out. We think they were probably sisters. Sarah attended the same church as the older John Adams. When Sarah died, her obit mentioned that she had three brothers and one sister still alive (1902). Another obit stated that she came west with her parents in 1850, but did not mention their names. Some people have thought that Sarah (born in TN) was the daughter of John Adams (and Matilda) of Coffee County. However, we cannot seem to find a John and Matilda who came to Oregon in 1850. They probably would have left the east in the spring and arrived in the fall. It has been suggested that Sarah would probably have married in the county where her parents lived - so that would be Benton. IN and working on the railroad in Wheeling WVA. My JOHN ADAMS b 1802 as you will see had a son, WILLIAM RILEY ADAMS that supposedly died in Wheeling WVA, but don't believe he did because he is buried in Monroe Co. IN. He had a brother JAMES H. born abt 1828. Of course my JAMES wasn't from Ireland, but born in Monroe Co. IN. I have a James Adams who supposedly worked on the National Road from Washington, PA through Wheeling, WV in the 1840-1850s. I don't know his parentage either, or if he had siblings, but the names Sarah, Cora, Ruth, Jane, James, William, repeat a lot among my own Adams and I noticed some of these names in your posting. I realize they were common names, but my ADAMS did use names over and over again. My Adams also resided VERY near Belmont, Co, as they lived in Monroe County right near the Belmont County line for many years as evidenced on the census. My James Adams was from Ireland. 2. Marilyn, You are trying to locate HUGH ADAMS, b. 1832 from PA. I don't if we connect or not, but I am looking for any HUGH ADAMS (born abt 1775) most likely in VA. I am looking for the parents and siblings of JOHN ADAMS born 1802 VA (that part of VA that became WVA between 1860 and 1870. I believe his father to be HUGH ADAMS b 1775 and ELEANOR ELLETTwho had a son JOHN ADAMS born 1802. We have all the same names, migration etc. HUGH and ELEANOR were in KY in the 1820 Pulaski Co. census living two or three doors from the BELLS. My JOHN ADAMS b 1802 married NANCY BELL (b 1802 in KY) in Monroe Co. IN in 1826. JOHN & NANCY'S children were: JAMES H. ADAMS b abt 1828 HUGH CALVIN ADAMS babt 1829 d. April 27, 1865, Dalton GA in the Civil War. WILLIAM RILEY ADAMS b 1831, Bean Blossom Twp.Monroe Co. IN d. IN that married a JANE HORTON/HOOTEN in 1843. I believe this wife was attached to JOHN in error. MARIAH ADAMS b May 3, 1809 WILLIAM ADAMS b February 21, 1811, m CATHERINE SPENCER. RACHEL ADAMS b in KY Nov. 29, 1812 d, Oct, 28 1885, m WILLIAM SALES HUGH ADAMS b February 27, 1815 I have quite a bit of info on these familes and on down from their birth dates. I just haven't been to prove that HUGH'S son JOHN b 1802 is my JOHN. I do have contacts with several of HUGH'S descendants with extensive family histories. I also have photos of my JOHN'S ( b 1802) son ANCIL and HUGH'S (b 1775) grandson ANCEL and they look like twins. I don't know if any of this might help you or not, but if you see any connection, let me know. 1. Adams from PA to Ohio/WV/Ind/Kansas
    2. Marilyn
    3. I am trying to locate Adams ancestors from Pennsylvania. My earliest known person is Hugh Adams, born PA, 1832-4, who married Lucinda Cooper, daughter of Jonah Cooper, and Matilda Williams, 4/17/1857 in Belmont County, Ohio. They moved briefly to Tyler County, WV, just before the Civil War, (on 1860 census) probably left there between 1862 and 1866 (based on birthplace of children) but definitely were in Hamilton County, Indiana by 1870, with a family. Children at 1870 were David F., b 1858 Ohio, John W., b 1862 VA (before it became WV), Jonah E., b. 1866 Ind (actual date is Feb. 1864). By the 1880 census they had additional child, Charles B., born Ind. 1874. There were also children who died: Arrissa J., b. Ohio 1855, d. 1863; Mary E., b. 1864, d. 1865; Lenora, b & d. 1872; Cora Bell, b. 1871, d. 1873; gravestones for all of those are in Carey Cemetery, White River Twp., Hamilton Co. Ind. Hugh and Lucinda went to Norton County, Kansas, with one son, Jonah E. Adams, and his wife, Louvina Adeline Scott Adams, b. Ind. 12/10/1865, about 1886 based on grandchildren's births (were on 1900 census) but were both returned for burial in Hamilton County, Indiana, in 1907 and 1909, respectively (Carey Cemetery). I cannot find any parents or siblings for Hugh Adams, and don't know where in PA he came from. There are several Hugh Adams during that period in PA, but cannot determine which is correct. I think the Adamses came from PA with the Cooper family into which Hugh married, since the Coopers are listed in census records as born in PA (John Cooper, Lucinda's grandfather, b. PA 1785, married Nancy Mercer b. NC, both listed on 1870 census living separately with family members.) The Coopers were in Belmont Co. Ohio by at least 1834, and there is a rumor they were from Washington Co., Pa. One possibility is Ephram Adams, b. Pa 1812 and Elizabeth, b. Pa. 1823, on Belmont Co. Ohio 1850 census, although Elizabeth could not be Hugh's mother. No children are shown with them. Hugh's son Jonah was named Jonah Ephraim. There is also a Jonah Adams on the 1830 census for Allegheny Co. Pa. Do any of these names ring any bells? Thanks, Marilyn

    3. Laurie, You mention knowing where they are buried.....have you contacted the cemetery 'owner's' or the county court house to see about getting any info. on the family that's buried there? They will (usually) have records of some kind for them. I can't find where Margaret is listed in your info. below, but if you know where she's buried you can get her info from the cemetery as well. This will give you (normally) the funeral home or the individual that took care of their body's & then you can contact the funeral home for the records......they usually have a copy of the Obit notice (if one was sent out) in the files for the person in question.
