Author: hcrafton1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.adams/9208.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Let me see if I can help clear this up. There are two men named Pleasant Adams, uncle and nephew. Richard Adams and Susannah Dawson were married in Virginia in 1787. They had 10 children, including two brothers Pleasant Adams and William Adams. The family moved from Virginia to Casey County, Kentucky sometime between 1800 and 1810, where they stayed until sometime between 1817-1820. It was most likely in Casey County that Pleasant Adams married Ruth Sutherland and William Adams married Rebecca Hodges. By 1820 the Adams clan had resettled in what is now the Kansas City area (Jackson, Clay, Ray counties). Pleasant and Ruth had 7 identified children, including your Rebecca Sutherland Adams. Apparently they ended up in Andrew County, Missouri, where is a probate record for Pleasant in 1848. The abstract reads as follows: "Adams, Pleasant, died intestate. Admr: James Garner. 18 Jun 1846. Sec. John Lumley & William Howard. Admr. testifies Pleasant Adams left four children: Lucinda Garner, Hanna {damaged} Rebecca English, and Susannah Smith, and two grandchildren, names unknown. Two resied in Andrew Co., two in Gentry Co., and the grandchildren in Clinton Co. MO. 18 Jun 1846" Source: Missouri Pioneers, Vol. 7 page 1. Evidently Ruth was already dead. Your Rebecca was still carrying the last name of her second husband, Henry English. William and Rebecca also had 7 identified children, including a son named Pleasant, who married Martha Patsy Powell. One of their daughters, Martha Frances Adams, married John Steven Dehart. Martha Adams and John Dehart are my great-great grandparents. There is a probate record for William Adams in Jackson County, Missouri in 1828. In 1845 several of the Adams children, including Pleasant (the nephew) resettled in Gentry (now Worth) County, Missouri. Their mother Rebecca is found in the 1850 census with two of her sons, living next to Pleasant and Patsy. I hope this helps. I'm doing some more research on this family next week. I'll be posting some more documentation in a few weeks. Jeff Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. John Quincy Adams is listed as his father and Sarah Rayfield as his mother. This is where I run into a brick wall - 1. Evidently there were many John Quincy Adams and 2. I have found very little on Sarah Rayfield. Also, I have searched many John Quincy Adams and did not find any census that lists Joseph Morgan as a member of John Q's household. Joseph Morgan was first married to Hattie Cornelia Copeland. After her death, he married a lady whose first name or perhaps nickname was Dollie. One of Joseph's sons, my grandfather Claude Levander Adams moved to Heath Springs, Lancaster County around 1936. Does anyone have any information they could share? Either on Joseph or my great grandmother, Hattie Cornelia Copeland? Thank you! Susan Carnes Ritchey Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I show Pleasant Adams as being born about 1730, marrying Ruthie Sutherland, and having a daughter, Rebecca Sutherland Adams. She married her 3rd husband, James Garner and their daughter, Hannah Frances (born 2-4-1856) married John James Jefferies (born 3-12-1852) who was my great-grandfather. Interestinly, John and Hannah lived in Holt County, MO, near Clay, MO. Any idea how to reconcile these two different accounts? I just asked for some assistance with research from the Mid Continent Library. Apparently there is a 2008 publications of Ray Co MO deaths from Feb 18, 1843 to dec 27, 1894. I keep hoping to find a death date for our James. Family lore says it was about 1848, but we don't even know where he was buried. If we can find out if he is related to other Adams at least that would give us something. Talk about frustrating! Our James was born about 1787 and was the oldest member of our clan. Most of our group were born in Fluvanna Co, VA then the others in Casey Co, KY. We have no family Tennessee births or residences. Most of our Adams family arrived at Ft Osage, MO in March 1820 and continued to live in a cluster along the Clay, Ray and Jackson county lines. I am preparing a map of the known properties they registered. We suspect that 'Dawson Adams' is our John Sorrel Dawson Adams who was in both Jackson and Ray Cos. Many, many, many Adams families began moving into the area after 1825. I recently spent a week at the beautiful new Mid-Continent Genealogy Library in Independence and I eliminated many of those other Adams. As I go through my notes and copies I will keep an eye open for a James that matches your particulars. I'll stay in touch, Gary Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: EliseAdams15 Surnames: Adams, Dawson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.adams/14309.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Gary, I'm wondering if you know who the "Dawson Adams" is? I noticed the 1901 book on Albemarle Co VA says he was in Ray Co MO. I still am not ruling out that my ancestor, James Adams, in Marion Twp/Knoxville, Ray Co MO in 1840, belongs to this line. It just seems like some of the pieces fit. I wonder where in the birth order of Richard and Susannah's children Dawson would have bee? James Adams was born sometime between the years of 1789-1805, probably closer to 1800, as on the 1840 census his age is "of 30, & under 40". He is close in age to Martin Adams who died as a result of a murder in Ray Co MO and in subsequent census records his children list their father's birth place as Tennessee. This is where James was born also. I don't have a lot to go on, but it just seems like a mystery I can't put down. Hope you can help me sort this out! Thanks!
