Author: Kent_McMahan Surnames: Adams, Cooksey Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.adams/13887.5.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Your post today, when combined with your prior post on 2/25/09 and my reply today with the marriage bond transcription, tell me why most have Jesse's parents as Edmund Adams and Elizabeth Cooksey. The lingering question for me now boils down to what is the given name of Elizabeth Cooksey's husband - was it really Edmund or Edward? Edward must be the eldest son named in Isaac Adams' will of 4 Jul 1774 Brunswick Co., VA, while Edmund is named next to last and is probably the next to youngest son. I see that the LDS Family History Library has microfilms available for the key records: the Brunswick Co. order book with the guardianship record and the Greensville Co. marriage bonds. They also have films of the Brunwick Co. will books. Have you, or anyone that you know, seen the key original records and verified that the given name in both the guardianship record and the marriage bond is EDMUND? As far as my own personal quest, Jesse is almost certainly the son of either Edmund Adams or Edward Adams, both sons of Isaac Adams of Brunswick Co., VA. The given names in your Adams family are not shared with the given names of the siblings and early male descendants of my wife's ancestor, Collin Adams. Therefore, I doubt that these two Adams families are related. Thanks so much for your help in resolving my issue. For the record, below are links to my RootsWeb World Connect database pages for "my" Collin Adams and your Jesse Adams............Kent http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=kmcmahan&id=I7693 http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=kmcmahan&id=I23166 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: dwollan Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.adams/13887.5.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Jesse had a brother, Wyatt and a sister named Polly. Their parents died when they were still very young. Below is the text of their guardianship records from the courts Guardianship for Jesse Adams, Polly Adams & Wyatt Adams At a Court held for Brunswick County at the Courthouse of the said County on Monday the 23rd day of December in the year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and ninety nine in the 24th year of our foundation. Prestet:: Thomas Stith, Thomas Claiborne, Thomas Saunders and William E. Brodnax. William Hideout is by the Court appointed Guardian to Jesse Adams, Polly Adams & Wyatt Adams orphans of Edmund Adams Dec. whereupon he, together with Stephen Vaughan & David Adams his securities entered into & acknowledged a bond in the penalty of Ten thousand Dollars with condition as the law directs for securing the said orphans estate. I Julian L. Scarborough, Deputy Clerk of the Circuit Court of the County of Brunswick, do hereby certify that the above is a true copy of the Order entered in the Circuit Court of Brunswick on the 23rd day of December 1799, as appears in Order Book # 18 at page 234. Given under my hand this 17th day of March' 1954 Julian S. Scarbough, Deputy Clerk These are probably records Fae dug up. I have copies of some of her work. Below are notes I've accumulated over the years. A native of Virginia, and farmer, he could not leave Virginia until he became of age to inherit his share of his fathers estate. He moved to Kentucky by December 1814 and appeared on the Allen County tax list. On 3/20/1817, Book b, page 574, Jessie was issued a Kentucky Land Warrent. (Grant 1124). The deed was signed by Lieut. Gov. Gabrial Slaughter. His land was on Trammel Fork of Drakes Creek in Warren County. Their daughter, Liza, was born there in 1818. On 9/24/1825, Jesse sold this land warrant of 50 acres in 1825 to Micajah Harmon for $225. The Harmon family still owned the land in 1952, and the log cabin at this location was still standing in good condition. The family bought 93 acres Northeast of Bowling Green, Kentucky, where he lived by John Price, F. R. Cowden and Mr Prunty. Jesse sold out in 1836, and all four extended families moved by wagon train, from Kentucky in April of 1836, to McLean County Illinois. They crossed the Mud River in Kentucky, then the Ohio River, and then Saline River near Equity, Illinois. That December in Illinois an arctic chill descended rapidly on McLean County. The temperature dropped from 40 degrees to minus 20 in 15 minutes. Stories from Mr. Prouty's son-in-law tell of leaving the barn , running through the slush snow. By the time he reached the house he was running on top of the frozen snow. He left a will in McLean County, Illinois (Probate 202, Box 6). Records from Hamilton County, Iowa, show him dying in February, not March, at age 56. He also lists an unknown daughter Eliza Roads, in addition to Elizabeth. 7 sons and 4 daughters. Executor was John Price and witness Rives Cowdan and Elias Hall. John Price and Rives Cowdan may have been relatives of Jesse but most assuredly a life long friends. In later year several family member married. I was recently at the grave for many of the Adams, Prices, Cowdens, Downs, etc. in the cemetery Downs IL. We also visited 12 other cemeteries and found related family in all but 2. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Kent_McMahan Surnames: Adams, Goodrum, Cooksey Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.adams/13887.5.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, I was recently contacted by a descendant of the subject Jesse Adams, who has a bound book of old letters and documents, which includes a hand-written letter from Sadie Fae Parrot to a "cousin" dated July 8, 1951. I am looking for any documentation supporting the parents of Jesse being Edmund Adams and wife Elizabeth Cooksey (as alleged in most on-line databases). I have see a transcription of 1781-1808 Greensville Co., VA marriage bonds compiled by Mrs. Dorothy Hedges Goodwyn which has one for: "Adams, Edward & Elizabeth Cooksey, 17 Dec., 1788. John Baptist Cooksay, father, consents. Isaac Adams, Sec." Have you found any documentary evidence for the parents of Jesse Adams? I ask because my wife descends from John Goodrum, brother of Jesse's father-in-law, Bennett Goodrum. My wife also descends from "brick-wall" Collin Adams, whose 21 Nov 1803 Greensville Co. marriage bond with Martha E. Goodrum is included in the above transcription. The bond was likely secured by Martha's father, the above John Goodrum. I'd like to see if a connection exists (or not) between my wife's Collin Adams and the subject Jesse Adams. I haven't yet found any. Kent in Louisville Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
