That helps alot ... and makes sense because last weekend I found an 1860 census for a John Adams living with several families in erath texas ... I was not sure if it was our John or not ... he was the right age, and born in MO. I also found one of the family members he was staying with used to live near cape g in the 1850 census so the census you found would make sense because he is not listed! Thank You! :) The search continues ... :) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I did find Andrew J.Adams,20 & Eva Adams, 10, living with an ElizaJ. Adams 47;Nancy E. Adams 16;George W Adams 15; and Hamilton Adams 14, all living in 1860 Bollinger Co Mo., Liberty Twp. census. If you look on a county map for MO, Bollinger Co is right west of Cape Girardeau Co Mo. The census says that ELiza was born in Tenn & all the children were born in MO. Maybe Eliza was a sister or sister-in-law to your Wm. Adams. Lots of women in those days had children while unmarried & gave them their last name & the census doesn't say if she was married, single or widowed. Hope this helps you with your search. If I find any more I will send to you. Sharon Karns [email protected] Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He came to North Carolina about the year 1820. Shortly after, he was employ- ed by W. P. Waugh, of Wilkesboro, [NC] to drive a team. At that time it must be remembered there were no railroads, all transportation was car- ried on by wagoning. Adams was sent to Charleston, Augusta, Colum- bia, Fayetteville, Petersburg, Rich- mond, Baltimore and other places as well. As Waugh carried on a large business, which required many teams running all the time, Adams was consequently on the road the year round. He drove 500 beeves to Bal- timore for Waugh at one time, and frequently took droves to other cit- ies in that direction. He was a remarkable man. Strict- ly honest, he never spoke anything but the truth, was candid in every- thing, never spoke evil of any one unless it was when he was greatly wronged. He married Margaret Goolsby [Goldsby] some 60 years ago. Two children were the fruits of this un- ion. William died several years ago. Arthur, a good and respectable citi- zen, is still living. Mr. Adams died the 7th of Jan., 1893, and was buried at the family cemetery, the funeral services con- ducted by Rev. I. W. Thomas. N. A. Powell Please let me know if you have anything further on this line of Adams. Would like to connect James to his Halifax VA line, and James' children. HELP! It is close to your location and there are a number of individuals named William. One couple with a son William was Andrew and Elizabeth Adams. Another couple with a son named William was Gilbert and Elizabeth Adams. For a while I thought one of these couples might be the parents of my great grandfather, William Kinney Adams but apparently not. Maybe ome is yours. The probate records at Chester may be of some help. There were several Adams wills probated during the 1840's. You can check the Illinois State Archives on line for indexes of these and some marriage and birth certificates as well. In your searching, if you come across the parents of a William Kinney Adams born around 1934, I would appreciate the information. For now, I am at a dead end. Author: JRay38M Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.adams/14698.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: With the earlier census you need to look for collateral names you know of that associated/married into those families as they normally went where they already knew someone... People didn't often venture out to an unknown territory knowing no one. You have to also do some math on them knowing the years they were born (aprx) as well as the childrens ages and follow several census. Personal property tax lists I hear are a wonderful aid to all this. I am not well versed on them myself as of yet. You can check those against possible deeds as well. Look in chancery suits (court documents) and the wills of father in laws etc. They often mention things like "my son" (meaning son in law's) husband of my daughter etc. Start from where you know he WAS and look for Personal property tax lists, deeds, etc. Always research other families connected. I've found amazing line connections that way. Always consider misspellings of the last names. Although Adams is pretty easy and gen! erally not messed up much in translating but with other names like Devault... or Greer.... look for things like Grier or Grur (someone mistaking the two ee's for a u or something) or Devault as maybe Devall etc. Old handwriting is sometimes hard to decipher not to mention census takers often wrote it phonetically as their spelling wasn't the best as they were usually in that profession because they could read and write. Also, how WE generally pronounce a name isn't sometimes how THEY pronounced it. For example... my Meadows has been found as Meddor, Meade etc. Look for guardian records as well if perhaps the parents died when there were minor children someone would have been appointed guardian. Children were also considered "orphans" even if mom was still alive. Look also for Estate Inventories and Wills. You can often find names of relatives and neighbors in the sale of the estates sometimes. If they had to pay off debts by holding an estate sale often relatives wo! uld buy up stuff. They will list debts owed to certain people too. Y ou very much have to research friends and relatives around them. Sometimes check a will of a brother in law etc... or a son.... for things like "land given me by my father in located in the county of ....." things like that. Leave no stone unturned as they say. Never know from under what rock you'll turn up a piece of gold! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am realativly new at this. I know I was suprised not to find them on a later census as well .. I wondered if some ilness was going around and the parents and perhaps the youngest fell prey to it. In working backwards I found the hard thing about the census data prior to 1850 is the fact that only the head of house is listed making it harder to look for common family names. Any suggestions around this? Also is that mainly what you look for is common family names? Thanks, Aimee Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Maybe try Obion Co. TN or in the area of White Co. IL and possibly back to the area of Chester Co. SC. My Adams line is a brick wall at the period of about 1820's when 3 of the boys were born in Chester SC supposedly their immigrant father (I think) came from Ireland originally. There were other Adams families in Chester as well. A lot of the Adams and collateral lines went to Obion Co. TN and then a few went to Indiana and mine into White Co. IL. There were some collateral lines who went to Cape Giradeau, MO, Ripley Co. MO - some into AR as well. River towns is where the action was back then and remember eveyone came from the East originally. I'd work your way backwards and investigate some of these Adams lines along the lower base of Indiana and Illinois and look around the river towns of TN and KY. Interesting that one of my direct granparents ended up in Grayson Co. TX which isn't that ! far from Erath. I'm surprised you can't find any of the boys or William on a later census. They usually told where they were born and where their parents were born. Good luck Janean Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
