while it isn't proof, there are/were several Indians, Mi'kmaq, and Abenaki, who took the name Baptist. I think it is safe to assume that that would also apply to the Cree and other Native groups that became baptised. Often it had been the name of the mother's father or oldest brother. The woman used it as a last name , and for family identification for the Church and census. Fran Wilcox
