    1. [ACADIAN-CAJUN] name mispelling on censuses in LA... few examples.
    2. Hey all, Happy New year. Just wanted to drop a quik note for those searching the census. I know most of you already have the experience and knack for reading censuses but for myself and other novices, I thought I would give an example of some of the name spelling variations that I have come accross. Most recent I notice that Ancestry.com and other indexes have the last name "BRAUD" as "BRAND" as most of you know in various handwritings, it would be easy for a "u" to look like a "n." Also, I have found one of my family names to be spelled MANY ways, it is "KIFF," but a french pronunciation of the name is (keef) therefore, I have found this name spelled as such; Keef, Keeth, Keiffe, etc.... I have also discovered that my "BARROSSE" surname must have sounded like "Burrows" to census takers..... haha Well, guess it just makes searching even more fun. Yea, well not so much fun, I tell ya. I sure as heck would LOVE if anyone had some ideas how I can find my "BOUTERIE/Boutary/Bouteri" family on the censuses. I am missing 1870, 1880; they were in Thibodaux, therefore I have looked mainly in Lafourche Parish, but also in the entire state, so am stuck. I have spelled the name MANY MANY different ways, also tried using "V" instead of "B" at the beginning of the name. I also tried "wildcard" searches, and even searches using the 1st names only. I am beginning to wonder if maybe by some chance they were recorded as "Boudrau" or some other name entirely different? any ideas, clues, etc? Goodluck in the new year! cheers, peace and happiness to all. brian w williams n' awlins PS. Are there ANY ongoing Louisiana DNA studies going on at present? Anyone doing a DNA group project?
