New Orleans was established in 1718 and named after Philippe, Duc d'Orleans [Duke of Orleans] who was a nephew of King Louis XIV. When Louis XIV died in 1715, his great-grandson [Louis XV]inherited the throne; however, he was only 5 so Philippe became Regent of France and ruled as Regent until his death on 12/2/1723.
