Hello Gordon 1st cousin and other related party marriages were very, very common. There were dispensations; but our "trusted" recorded sources DNO, DOBR, and Hebert did not indicate dispensations granted. My data shows Emilie "Melite" to be the daughter of Sylvain, III and Josephine Bello. He was the son of Sylvain, fils and his first wife Emilie Comeaux. Elise was the daughter of Sylvain, fils and his (second) wife Judith Bello. That would make Elise the aunt of Melite. I've pieced this together from what records I've been able to scrape together, but it seems like this implies a way- too-close-relationship marriage. I'm trying to sort out Onezime Carriere who m. Elise Sonnier. They had a son, Onezime, b. in Opelousas in 1828, who m. Azeline Derbonne, daughter of Michel and Melite (Sonnier) Derbonne. The records are pretty clear that Melite Sonnier was the daughter of Sylvain Sonnier by his first wife Judith Bello. The problem is, I've also found indications that Elise Sonnier who married Onezime Carriere was also a daughter of Sylvain and Judith. This would make Elise and Melite sisters, and Onezime and Azeline Derbonne first cousins. It's not impossible -- I know it happened -- but wouldn't there have to be some kind of dispensation recorded for this marriage? If there is one, I've never found it. So the question is: is this correct? Especially, was Elise Sonnier, wife of Onezime Carriere, the daughter of Sylvain and Judith (Bello) Sonnier, or did I record something incorrectly? With a few exceptions, the detailed formal dispensation submittals ended when Louisiana became a Territory. Some records will show "with dispensation" but the formal dispensations that had to be sent to the Bishop under the Spanish period weren't made. Sylvain Sonnier II, son of Sylvain I and Madeleine Bourg was married to Judith Bello, She was his 2nd wife - his first wife was Emilie Comeaux. Judith had a daughter named Josephine [the birth record just shows Judith as the mother and the year is shown as 1/29/1777 which was actually Judith's birthdate so Josephine was most likely born in 1797 - she was baptized in Sept. 10, 1797. On another record, Josephine's father is shown as Joseph. Sylvain Sonnier II had several children, including Melite, with Josephine Bello before and after Judith died in 1817. He died in 1829. In 1839, Sylvain Sonnier III, the son of Sylvain II and his first wife, Emelie Comeaux, married Josphine Bello. They weren't related, but her children were his half brothers and sisters. Judith Bello was the daughter of Donato Bello and his wife, Suzanne Moreau. Donato also had several children with Jeanne Taillefer, a mixed race mistress. The children of this union initially took the surname Bello but later changed it to Donato. Some became wealthy landowners in St. Landry Parish. Donato Bello was from Naples, Italy and was an officer in the Opelousas Militia. Suzanne Moreau was from Mobile. Jeanne Taillefer was from New Orleans. I just noticed that one record refers to Sylvain Sonnier II as Pere so Sylvain Sonnier, fils who had the children with Josephine Bello could have been Sylvain III. He was born abt 1794 and Josephine was born in 1797. Melite was married in 1826 so she would have been been born about 1812. Sylvain III would have been 18 and Josephine 15. Since Josephine was the step-sister of Sylvain III, they might not have been allowed to marry. This scenario makes more sense since many persons were married after having had several children. Also, the succession for Sylvain II doesn't mention the children shown for Sylvain and Josephine.
