    3. To add to the saga, Sylvain III also had a son named Sylvain. So Sylvain III is shown as Slvain, pere and Sylvain IV is shown as fils. The French didn't use the Roman Numeral designation so it is sometimes difficult to track persons who marry women with similar names. In addition to Josephine Bello's birthdate being confused with her mother Judith Bello's date, she is shown as Judith on some records. I'm working on sorting out all the children. He was born abt 1794 and Josephine was born in 1797. Melite was married in 1826 so she would have been been born about 1812. Sylvain III would have been 18 and Josephine 15. Since Josephine was the step-sister of Sylvain III, they might not have been allowed to marry. This scenario makes more sense since many persons were married after having had several children. Also, the succession for Sylvain II doesn't mention the children shown for Sylvain and Josephine. Stanley LeBlanc http://www.thecajuns.com Further to what Stanley wrote: MULTIPLE SYLVAIN SONNIERS In the early years of the Acadians in Louisiana, there were a number of Sylvain Sonniers which has caused some confusion. Using church records and census data, I have come up with the following relationships and would appreciate any additions or corrections to the material. The first Sylvain Sonnier (Saulnier in Acadia and in early Louisiana) came to Louisiana probably arriving in May 1765 and settling in Opelousas. He was listed as a bachelor in the 4 April 1766 Opelousas census. Sylvain I (Etienne/Jeanne Comeau) was born ca. 1737 (census data) and was buried 25 January 1801 in Opelousas (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1-B p. 663). He married Madeleine Bourg (Charles/Anne Boudrot) between 4 April 1766 census and1768 because in the 1771 Opelousas census, they are listed with a daughter age 3 (Church records of this period have been lost). Madeleine Bourg was born 1 April 1744 in Tracadie, Ile St. Jean. She died 30 May 1814 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2-A p. 122). They had 10 children, one of whom was Sylvain II. Silvain (SONNIER) (Silvain & Magdelene Bourque) bn. 6 Feb. 1771 (PCP-2, part 2, 106a) (DOBR Records v. 2 p. 679) Sylvain II (Sylvain I/Madeleine Bourg) died 28 September 1829 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2-C p. 708). Previously, he had filed a Succession (will) dated October 1821 listing his four sons by his first marriage (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2-B p. 861). This sometime causes confusion about his death date. Sylvain II appears in the 1810 and 1820 census. Sylvain II married first on 19 May 1789 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1-A p. 723) Emilie (Humilde) Comeaux (Charles/Anastasie Savoie). Emilie was born ca. 1773 (census data) and was buried 20 February 1801 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1-B p. 188). They had at least 4 (maybe 5) children including: SONNIER, Silvain (Silvain el hijo & Emilie Comeaux) b. 1 April 1789, bt. Thursday, 25 Dec. 1794 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1-A, p. 723) However, also listed is: SONNIER, Silvain (Silvain Sogne el hijo) bur. Saturday, 2 Jan. 1796 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1-A, p. 723) Since there are numerous later church records for a Sylvain Sonnier, son of Sylvain & Emilie Comeaux and a Sylvain is listed in the Succession dated October 1821, maybe, as often was the custom when a child died, the next child born was given the same name (Sylvain IIIa was buried 2 Jan. 1796, Sylvain IIIb may have been born ca. 1798.) Before going on with Sylvain IIIb (Sylvain II/Emilie Comeaux), it is necessary to look at the second marriage of Sylvain II. Emilie Comeaux was buried 20 February 1801 and on 10 December 1802, Sylvain II married Judith Bello (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1-B, p. 663). Judith Bello (Donat/Suzanne Moreau) was born 29 January 1777 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1-A p. 45) and was buried 4 February 1817 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2-A p. 49). Prior to her marriage to Sylvain, it would appear Judith had an illegitimate child: BELLO, Josephine (Judith Bello) b. 29 January 1777 (sic- birth date of mother), bt. Tuesday, 10 Sep. 1799 Spons: Joseph Moreau, her uncle & Suzanne Moreau, her maternal grandmother. (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1-A p. 45). The 1777 birth date is in error as it clearly states Suzanne Moreau, mother of Judith Bello is the grandmother of Josephine. This error has caused some researchers to believe Judith and Josephine are the same person. Other sources indicate the father of Josephine may have been Joseph Poire (see later). Now back to the marriage of Sylvain II and Judith Bello. In Hebert SWLA Records v. 1-B p. 663 is found: SONNIER, Silvain- a widower of this post (dec. Silvain & Magdeleine Bourg) m. 10 Dec. 1802 Judith Bello- also single, native and living in this post (Donato & Susanne Moreau), Declare a son of 3 months of age [Donat bpt. 20 Feb. 1808 at age 5 yrs. (Hebert SWLA Records v.1-B p. 661)]. It would seem Judith was unmarried and had another child out of wedlock. Remember she also had a daughter Josephine (age 3) prior to this wedding. After Sylvain II married Judith Bello, Sylvain IIIb and Josephine Bello lived in the same household. Now on to Sylvain IIIb. He may have been born ca. 1798. His Succession was dated October 1851. There are three interesting entries in the church records concerning Sylvain IIIb and Josephine Bello (who grew up in the same household): BELLO, Emilie (Josephine & from what they told me, Sylvain Saunier fils from here) b. in January 1814, bt. 18 June 1817 Pats: Sylvain Saunier & Emilie Comeau from here; Mats: Donato Bello from Italy & Suzanne Moro from Mobile (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2-A p. 48). BELLO, Judic (Josephine Bello & from what they have told me, Sylvain Saunier fils from here) b. in Jan, 1814, bt. 18 June 1817 Pats: Sylvain Saunier & Emilie Comau from here; Mats: Donato Bello from Italy and Suzanne Moro (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2-A p. 49). Shortly after the 18 June 1817 baptisms of Emilie and Judic, Silvain III and Josephine Bello must have married because their next child appears in the church records as: SONNIER, Sylvain (Sylvain fils & Josephine Poire from here) b. 11 Feb. 1818, bt. 7 Jul 1818. Pats: Sylvain Saunier & Emile Comau from here Mats: Joseph Poire & Judic Bello from here (Herbert SWLA Records v. 2-A p. 878). This is the source for Joseph Poire being the father of Josephine. Sylvain IIIb and Josephine Bello had 6 children including: Sylvain IV, b. 11 February 1818 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2-A p. 878) married first 10 January 1837 (Opel. Ch.: v. 2, p. 104) Marie-Louise Sonnier (Louis/Denise Carrierre) born 3 November 1819 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2-B p. 860). No further research on this Sylvain has been done. There were two other Sylvains in early Louisiana of which I am aware. Charles Sonnier (Sylvain I/Madeleine Bourg) bpt. 26 Aug. 1781 at 4 ½ months (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1-A p. 719) married ca. 1804 Sophie Bello (Donat/Suzanne Moreau) b. 16 May 1784 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1-A p. 45). (Sophie was a sister of Judith Bello). They had at least 4 children including: SONNIER, Silvain (Charles Soigne & Sophie Bello) b. 30 Dec. 1807, bt. 15 July 1819 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1-B p. 663) He would be a nephew of Sylvain II and a cousin of Sylvain IIIb. Louis Sonnier (Sylvain II/Emilie Comeaux) b. 3 August 1797 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1-A p. 721) married 20 February 1816 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2-A p. 876) Denise Carrierre (Pierre & Marie-Louise Vivarene). They had at least 8 children including: SONNIER, Sylven (Louis Sogne & Denise Carrierre) b. 12 Feb. 1822, bt. 12 March 1822 Pats: Sylven Soigne & Emile Comeau Mats: Pierre Carriere & Marie-Louise Vivaret. (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2-B p. 861). He would be a nephew of Sylvain IIIb. Hope this helps in keeping the Sylvain Sonniers and their relationships with the Bellos straight.
