Owen Taggart (who is wonderful) sent the following response. Hope it helps In a message dated 10/22/03 09:15:47 AM Eastern Daylight Time, seaire@starband.net writes: In french it says "L'évèque a accordé une dispense de parenté spirituelle." As near as I can figure, the bride was probably a former nun on probation who chose not to proceed with her final vows. Does anyone have any better idea what this dispensation is about? In English it would say "The bishop granted a dispensation from spiritual relationship." Until the first Code of Canon Law was compiled and promulgated in 1917, the impediment of spiritual relationship arose between the person baptised or confirmed and the minister of baptism, the sponsors (godparents), and between the parents of the person baptised or confirmed and the minister and sponsors. In the 1917 Code, the impediment existed only between the person baptised and the minister or sponsor. In the current Code, there is no longer an impediment of spiritual relationship. Fr. Owen Taggart
