About 1500 were sent to Virginia, where the government refused to allow them to disembark. So they were sent to England. Hundreds died due to overcrowding and disease. They spent the years from 1755 to 1763 as prisoners of war in selected cities in England. Once the war between England and France was over, French authorities obtained permission for the Acadians in England to return to France. Some of the ship lists are in a collection known as the La Rochette papers. The complete lists were published by the Milton and Norma Reider in The Acadians in France, V.
