Upcoming Lecture: Prince Edward Island historian and folklorist Georges Arsenault will give a free public lecture entitled What Became of the Acadians Deported from Ile Saint-Jean in 1758 in the Confederation Centre of the Arts' Studio Theatre on Monday, October 27, at noon. Some 5000 Acadians and other Frenchmen were living on the Island in 1758 when it fell into British hands, says Arsenault. Of that population, around 3100 were deported to France while the others managed to escape to the mainland or stayed hidden on the Island. In his lecture, he will explain what happened to all of these Islanders and where they finally settled. Using several families as examples, including the Douvilles, Charpentiers, Doirons, Boudrots, Gallants, and Arsenaults, he will describe the incredible journeys on which many of them embarked, taking some of them as far south as the Falkland Islands. The lecture will be given in English. Coffee and tea will be served. (from the Island Register 24October 2003)
