Hi George - rehabilitation is the word. The Acadians who were married while in Exile did not have priests available. Catholic priest were forbidden to go near the Acadians with the threat of death or imprisonment over their heads. The Bishop of Quebec named educated laymen among the Acadians to officiate at the baptisms, marriages and burials and to keep records of such. When an Acadian couple was marriage before this person it was with the understanding that they would seek the blessing of the Catholic Church on their marriage as soon as they were free to go before a priest. These are called "rehabilitated" marriages - I would have called them marriages blessed in the church - personally, I dislike the term rehabilitated because it sounds like they had done something wrong. Anyhow - that's me <smile> - but that it the meaning an the reasoning behind it all.
