Can someone give me the date of marriage and parents of Jean POIRIER and Madeleine RICHARD? They were exiled to Louisiana. Thank you, Paula
I should have added this clarification that *no* Acadians were exiled to Louisiana. They made their way their on their own volitions once the years of exile had ended. The majority of Acadians who settled in Louisiana went there from France in 1785 when the Spanish government of Louisiana sent the ships that would take them to settle the territory. The majority of the Acadians who sailed from France to Louisiana had been exiled to British prisons in 1755 when the governor of Virginia refused to allow them to remain there. They were exiled to Louisiana. > Thank you, > Paula Jean-Baptiste Poirier, son of Jean-Baptiste Poirier & Marie Cormier, married ca 1759 Marie-Madeleine Richard, daughter of Jean-Baptiste Richard & Catherine Cormier (White "Dictionnaire" p. 1336). Jean-Baptiste Richard, son of Martin Richard & Marguerite Bourg, married ca 1740 Catherine Cormier, daughter of Alexis Cormier & Marie LeBlanc (White "Dictionnaire" p. 1381). These two couples, along with Jean-Baptiste Cormier and Marguerite Richard, were exiled to Georgia. After leaving Savannah, Georgia, they were listed in the 23 August 1763 census in South Carolina (Jehn "Acadian Exiles in the Colonies" p. 231). They left South Carolina, went to New York, then went south to Louisiana, arriving in New Orleans in February 1764, the first documented Acadians to arrive in Louisiana (four families, 20 individuals "Quest for the Promised Land" p. 16). The 3 couples were enumerated in the 8 April 1766 census of Verret's Company (Voorhies "Some Eighteenth Century Louisianians" p. 114). Roger A. Rozendal rogroz@swbell,net
