A large number of the Acadians who arrived in 1785 settled along Bayou Lafourche. At the time, the entire area was known as Lafourche des Chitimachas. Today, parts of Ascension, Assumption, Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes are involved. The Terrebonne Genealogical Society [TGS] has some excellent publications. Individual historians and genealogists such as Audrey Westerman and Elton J. Oubre have also published excellent works.
