    3. A large number of the Acadians who arrived in 1785 settled along Bayou Lafourche. At the time, the entire area was known as Lafourche des Chitimachas. Today, parts of Ascension, Assumption, Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes are involved. The Terrebonne Genealogical Society [TGS] has some excellent publications. Individual historians and genealogists such as Audrey Westerman and Elton J. Oubre have also published excellent works. I have a link to the TGS on my Parish genealogy and History page at http://www.thecajuns.com/pargene.htm and current publications available from Mr. Oubre and Ms. Westerman on my Books and Publications page at http://www.thecajuns.com/books.htm. It is important to keep in mind that the publications are the result of over 25 years of work and some individual publications took over 5 years of research. Ms. Westerman is also a recognized expert on Native American Research. She has provided the documentation for federal and state tribal recognition for the Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw Indians of Lafourche and Terrebonne.
