Hi Andy, I too, have not been able to come up with a birth record for Joseph Mire, who would come to marry Emelie Guilbeaux...but here is what I have found regarding Joseph in my research Lillian C. Bourgeois, Cabanocey, The History, Customs and Folklore of St. James Parish, p. 176 [CENSUS OF ACADIAN COAST dated September 14, 1769], LEFT BANK, MISSISSIPPI RIVER: Family # 100 Simon Mirre, age 25 Magdelaine Cormier, wife, age 25 Joseph, son, age 8 (mths) [born abt. Jan 1769] Marie, daughter, age 2.old. That Joseph Mire actually married Madeleine Granger is questionable, because, 1st: no marriage record can be found for Joseph & Madeleine 2nd: when their son, Joseph married, he is listed as "(major son and natural son of Joseph & Magdeleine GRANGER)". This usually indicates that his parents never married. <<MIRE, Joseph Simon (Joseph - of the Mississippi & Magdeleine GRANGE - of Opelousas) b. 11 Sept. 1796, bt. 6 July 1797 Pats: Simon MIRE & Magdalen CORMIER - of Acadie; Mats: Joseph GRANGER & Genevieve BABIN - of Acadie; Spons: Firmin GIROUARD & Anne DUGA, wife of Joseph GRANGER. Simon and Madeleine [who married 3/31/1766] had a son named Joseph bn abt 1769 [he was 8 mos old on the 9/14/1769 census]. This Joseph married Emilie Guilbeaux on Aug. 16, 1796 - see Marriage Investigation below. MIRE, Joseph - 28 yrs. old from St. James Parish, Louisiana (Simon & Magdeleine CORMIER) "Informacion de Solteria Producida" - [Marriage Investigation regarding the freedom to marry] dated: 27 July 1796 Emilie GUILLEBAUD - of this parish (Charles & Anne TRAHAN) Wits: Louis CHEMIN - bedo [sacristan] of this parish, assistant witness, Jean FRANC-MERCADE- assistant witness, Bazile LANDRY, Jean Baptiste BRUSARD - the last two between 40-50 yrs. [Usually 2 assisting witnesses and ordinary witnesses]. Fr. Michel Bernard BARRIERE (SM Ch.: Marriage Investigation: Folio D, #5) Joseph and Madeleine Granger apparently had an out-of-wedlock child born in Sept. 1796, a month after he married Emilie. Perhaps this is why there was a Marriage Investigation! I checked Madeleine Granger. She married Adam Crawford on 9/9/1800 and he adopted her 4 year-old son, Joseph Simon. Joseph Mire, son of Simon and Magdeleine Cormier had 3 brothers: Pierre, Simon & Benjamin. There isn't a marriage record for Pierre. Simon married Constance Broussard and he died Jun 14, 1800. Benjamin was born in 1783 married Marie Bernard in 1810. A logical conclusion is that Joseph fathered the child. What is interesting is why he didn't marry Magdeleine. Good Morning Stanley, Rita came to the same conclusion as you and after clearing of the forest of the trees I agree. :-) Thanks for the additional information for Magdeleine as well. I will add the detail to her record. It is possible that her family would not allow the wedding or that she was sent to stay with another relative. Who knows. :-) AS -----Original Message----- From: Stanley LeBlanc [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, March 17, 2006 8:55 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [ACADIAN-CAJUN] Magdeleine Granger's Marriage & Adoptionof her son, Joseph Simon I checked Madeleine Granger.
