    3. Just a reminder that Simon Mire and Madeleine Cormier had a marriage contract recorded on the German Coast, now filed in the courthouse records at Hahnville. 3. Re Elton's note that Magdeleine Cormier was in the first group of Acadians - he means the 1764 group of 24 who arrived in New Orleans from New York via Mobile. Lillian Bourgeois in Cabanocey has the marriage of Magdeleine in the section re marriages in Cabanocey and also the marriage of sisters Marie and Marguerite [2nd marriage]. Elton documents on page 69 of his book Vacherie that the marriage contracts were made with the Commandant of St. Charles. Elton's book is a must have! 1. Re: [ACADIAN-CAJUN] Joseph MIRE, detail
    2. Elton J. Oubre
    3. Andy; I sent the following note to Stanley, but I should have sent it to you, and all, also, being applicable history. I call attention to Mrs. Consentino's newspaper finds that 21 Acadians were reported as leaving for Mobile, at the end of 1763, and the New Orleans authorities reported the 1764 arrival of 20 people in 4 families. There was a later baptism of an infant within a few months, bringing the group back up to 21, and growing! I can add my opinion that the religious marriage ceremony of the parents and the later baptism of Joseph Mire were probably by the priest of St. Charles of the Germans, which was located around Taft of current day, about 20 miles downriver from where the first Acadians settled, and this priest was the missionary for the area of the arriving Acadians, before they had a church, and that the priest recorded the marriage and baptism in the records of St. Charles of the Germans, that those records were transferred to St. Charles Boromeo, when it was later reestablished across the river in Destrehan, as the Little Red Church, and that those records were reportedly totally burned and destroyed, with the exception of the register for the oldest period, which was a duplicate as required by colonial law and which escaped burning because it was stored in the French colonial archives, later discovered by the WPA, which state property was then secretly turned over to the archdiocese, which records are now published in the NO Archdiocese books, and barely survived Katrina. Most of this is not provable fact. Andy, this is the documentation for Simon Mire. His parents are not entered in the record. Calendar Of Louisiana Colonial Documents, Volume III, St. Charles Parish, The D'Arensbourg Records, 1734-1769; compiled by Elizabeth Becker Gianelloni. "StC., 1766- #157; March 31, 2pp. 533, 536; Marriage Contract: Jean Cormie' and his wife Madaleine Richard appear for their daughter, Magdaleine Cornier who is marrying Simon Mire. Neither the bride nor the groom has anything to give the other, but they promise to submit to the customs and usage of the Colony as to any future property. This marriage contract signed by D'arensbourg and by the marks of Jean Cormie', Madalaine Cormie', Simon Mire, Joachim Mire, Jean Marie Richard, and Olivier Par." The document ahead of this is March 30th, Marriage Contract of Marie Cormie', another daughter, to Michel Poirier. See page 69 of my book. These documents, the earliest to mention these other two sisters, helped establish who were the first 20 of 1764. I have no questions on the whereabouts of the 1764 arrivals. I have spent a good bit of time documenting this. The Verret militia list, the M. Cantrelle census, and the later US land grants document where they were settled:, the later area of Lagan/Moonshine, in St. James Parish, which was incidentally in a curve of the river, an old floodplain, area of numerous crevasses, with Cabanocey being one of the river's tributaries.. ***********----- Original Message ----- From: "Andy" <[email protected]> To: "'Elton J.
