Continuing with what my research has indicated, the next five names on the list of holders of receipts for Canadian Money are: 16) OLIVIER THIBAUDEAU 17) LOUISE THIBAUDEAU 18) PAUL THIBAUDEAU 19) PIERRE SURET 20) JEAN SEMÉRE Again, these are a family grouping. 16) OLIVIER THIBAUDEAU Olivier Thibodeau, born 14 Jan 1732, the son of Charles Thibodeau (White p. 1509) and Francoise Comeau (White p. 376) married 1) ca 1760 Madeleine Broussard, born ca 1733?, daughter of Alexandre Broussard (White p. 285) and Marguerite Thibodeau (White p. 1517), widow of Jean-Baptiste Landry. Madeleine Broussard married first ca 1752 Jean-Baptiste Landry, possibly son of Jean-Baptiste Landry (White p. 924) and Marguerite Comeau (White p. 378). A daughter, Anne, was born13 Sep 1753 and Jean-Baptiste died before 1760. A son, Theodore, and a daughter, Marie, were born to Olivier and Madeleine ca 1761. 12 August 1763 list of prisoners at Halifax (Jehn p. 252) Aulivie Tibeaudau, his wife, three children These would seem to be : Olivier Thibodeau age 31 Madeleine Broussard age 30 Anne Landry (step daughter) age 9 Marie age 2 Theodore age 2 Olivier and his family came to Louisiana with Joseph Broussard where on 4 April 1765, he signed the D¹Auterive Compact. On 5 April 1765, he received a receipt for 1115 livres 15 sols in billetes in Canadian money (Receipts). They then settled at Attakapas where on 10 May 1765 is recorded: THIBODEAUX, Margueritte-Anne (Olivier & Magdelene Broussard) b. 10 May 1765, bpt. 11 May 1765 (SM Ch.: v. 1, p. 5; SM Ch.: Slave Funeral Register v. 1, p. 1 #1- Hebert v. 1A pp. 752-753), the first birth and the first Acadian record in the Attakapas registers. On 16 May 1765 is also recorded: BROUSSARD, Magdeleine - wife of Olivier Thibaudaut d. 16 May 1765 (SM CH.: Slave Funeral Register v. 1, #2; SM CH.: v. 1, p. 6- Hebert v. 1A p. 140). It is also noted in the record that her daughter, Marguerite-Anne, died the same day. In the 1766 Attakapas census is found: Olivier Thibodau, 1 militia man, 1 boy, 2 girls These are: Olivier Thibodeau age 34 Theodore age 5 Anne Landry age 12 Marie age 5 Between the 1766 census (25 April 1766) and the 1769 census, Olivier married a second time to Agnes Brun, born ca 1743, possibly daughter of Charles Brun (White p. 292) and Anne Caissie (White p. 311), widow of Paul Doucet. Agnes Brun married ca 1763 Paul Doucet, possibly son of either Pierre-Paul Doucet (White p. 534) and Anne Brun (White p. 297) or Alexis Doucet (White p. 540) and Madeleine Leger (White p. 1043). A daughter, Annette, was born ca 1764. (Paul may have been imprisoned at Ft. Edward and Agnes at Halifax with Gregoire Pellerin and his wife Cecile Prejean before they were married). Paul probably never arrived in Louisiana, because in the 1766 Attakapas census is found: Widow Ana Brun, 1 woman, 1 girl This should be: Agnes Brun, widow of Paul Doucet, age 23 Annette Doucet age 2 Agnes was listed only 2 doors from Olivier in the census. In the 1769 Attakapas census is found: Ollivier Tibodeau age 35 (sic) Wife (Agnes Brun age 26) Anne, daughter (sic) (stepdaughter Landry) age 15 Theodor, son age 8 Marie, daughter age 8 Anne daughter (sic) (stepdaughter Doucet) age 5 17) LOUISE THIBAUDEAU Marie-Louise Thibodeau, born ca 1737, is the daughter of Charles Thibodeau (White p. 1509) and Francoise Comeau (White p. 376) and the sister of Olivier Thibodeau. As I stated previously, Marie-Louise was probably imprisoned at Halifax with Silvain Breau and Isabelle Darois (see 5) SILVAIN BRAUD) where ca 1763, she married Pierre Gautreau, son of Pierre Gautreau (White p. 696) and Marie-Josephe Bugead (White p. 301). Shortly before leaving Halifax with Joseph Broussard, a daughter, Marie-Josephe, was born 3 Apr 1764. However, Pierre never reached Louisiana, because immediately after the arrival of Joseph Broussard¹s group in New Orleans is recorded: ADNO v. 2, p. 138: GOTREAU, Marie-Josephe (dec. Pierre & Louise Tibeaudau) baptised 22 Feb 1765, born 3 Apr 1764 (SLC, 85, 82). On 5 April 1765, Louise received a receipt for 50 livres in billetes in Canadian money (Receipts). Louise and Marie-Josephe then settled at Attakapas. In the 1766 Attakapas census is found: Maria Thibodeau widow 1 woman, 1 girl Marie-Louise Thibodeau, widow Pierre Gatreau, age 29 Marie-Josephe Gatreau age 2 Marie-Louise was living near her brother Amand Thibodeau. Before the 1769 Attakapas census, Marie-Louise died because in that census is found: Amand Tibodeau age 29 (sic) His wife (Gertrude Bourg age 27) Blandine daughter age 2 Isaac son age 1 Marguerite Bourque (sister of Gertrude) age 25 Marie Gotreau (Gautreau) age 5 (orphan of Pierre Gautreau & Marie-Louise Thibodeau, sister of Amand) 18) PAUL THIBAUDEAU Paul Thibodeau (White p. 1523), born 27 Jul 1728, son of Claude Thibodeau and Elizabeth Comeau married ca 1763 (Halifax) Rosalie Guilbeau, born ca 1744, daughter of Joseph Guilbeau (White p. 782) and Madeleine Michel (White p. 1184). Paul seems to have been imprisoned at Halifax with his cousin Paul Thibodeau and his wife Marguerite Trahan while Marguerite was with her parents there until they were married. Paul and Rosalie came to Louisiana with Joseph Broussard where on 5 Apr 1765, Paul received a receipt for 32 livres in billetes in Canadian money (Receipts). They then settled in Attakapas where in the 1766 Attakapas census is found: Pablo Thibaudau, 1 militia man, 1 woman Paul Thibodeau age 37 Rosalie Guilbeau age 22 On 26 August 1765 is recorded: THIBODEAUX, Andre-Paul (Paul Tibaudeau & Rosalie Guilbaud) b. 26 Aug 1765, bpt. 27 Aug 1765 (SM CH.: Slave Baptism Register v. 1, p. 2 #5- Hebert v. 1A pp. 743-744). In the 1769 Attakapas census is found: Paul Tibodeau age 36 (sic) His wife (Rosalie Guilbeau age 25) Paul son age 3 Isaac new born 19) PIERRE SURET Pierre Suret, born 25 Sep 1736, son of Joseph Suret (White p. 1476) and Marguerite Terriot (White p. 1500) married ca 1761 Marie Thibodeau, born ca 1741, daughter of Paul Thibodeau (White p. 1520) and Marguerite Trahan (White 1542). A daughter, Marie-Anne, was born 24 Feb 1762, probably while the family was imprisoned at Ft. Edward. 12 Jul 1762 Ft. Edward (Consentino) Pre Suret Jun 2 The men were in Halifax at this time so this must be: Marie Thibodeau age 21 Marie-Anne Suret new born 11 Oct 1762 Ft. Edward (Consentino) Pre Suret jun 3 The men had returned from Halifax so this is: Pierre Suret age 26 Marie Thibodeau Marie-Anne Suret Pierre and his family came to Louisiana with Joseph Broussard in February 1765 and one of the first things they did was have their daughter baptised. ADNO v. 2, p. 259 SURRE, Marie Anne (Pierre and Marie Thibodo), baptised 4 March 1765, born 24 Feb 1762, in Chipute, England (SLC 85, 84). On 5 April 1765, Pierre received a receipt for 15 livres in ordonnances and 88 livres in billetes in Canadian money (Receipts). They then settled in Attakapas where there is recorded: Hebert v. 1A, pp.735-736 SURET, Augustin (Pierre & Marie Thibaudaut) b. 19 Jun 1765, bt. 19 Jun 1765 (SM CH.: Slave Baptism Register v. 1, p. 1, #3; SM CH.: v. 1, p. 7) It seems Pierre and Augustin both died between 19 Jun 1765 and 24 April 1766 because they are not present in the 1766 census or any later records. It is also difficult to place Marie and her daughter in the 1766 census, but a good possibility (after eliminating most other possibilities) is that she was with Gregoire Pellerin and his wife, Cecile Prejean. Gregoire¹s brother, Charles, was married to Isabelle Thibodeau, sister of Marie, and they lived next door to Gregoire. In the 1766 Attakapas census is found: Jorge Pellerin 1 militia man, 1 woman, 1 boy (sic), 1 girl The first known child of Gregoire and Cecile was Emilie born ca 1767; therefore, there should have been no children in 1766. My premise is that the 1766 Attakapas listing may be: Gregoire Pellerin age 42 Cecile Prejean, his wife, age 36 Marie Thibodeau, widow Suret, age 25 Marie-Anne Suret age 4 Anyway, shortly after the 1766 census Marie married Jean-Baptiste Sémer and in the 1769 Attakapas census is found: Jean B. Semer age 25 Wife (Marie Thibodeau, widow Suret, age 28) Marie, daughter (sic) (stepdaughter) age 8 Jean Semér is next on the Receipt list refer to next write up for more. 20) JEAN SEMÉRE Jean-Baptiste Semér, born ca 1744, son of Jean Semér (White p. 1578) and Elizabeth Saulnier (White 1448) was separated from his parents in the Grand Derangement and they were deported to France. Jean-Baptiste is not listed in the prisoner lists at Halifax or Ft. Edward, but at age 19, he was probably included as a ³child² with some family. Because of his close association with Thibodeaus (Amand and Marie-Louise), he may have been with Silvain Breau and Isabelle Darois (see 5) SILVAIN BRAUD) in Halifax. He came to Louisiana with Joseph Broussard where on 5 April 1765, he received a receipt for 604 livres in billetes in Canadian money (Receipts). He settled in Attakapas where in the 1766 Attakapas census is found: Juan Baptista (sic) (Semér) 1 militia man (age 22) On both sets of the original census, the last name is missing, but by the process of elimination, it has to be Jean-Baptiste Semer. Sometime before 12 Aug 1766, Jean-Baptiste wrote a letter to his father in Le Havre, France extolling the virtues of Louisiana and causing many there to petition the government to go to Louisiana (³Quest for the Promised Land² p. 77). Shortly after the 1766 census Jean-Baptiste Semér married Marie Thibodeau, widow of Paul Suret and in the 1769 Attakapas census is found: Jean B. Semer age 25 Wife (Marie Thibodeau, widow Suret, age 28) Marie, daughter (sic) (stepdaughter) age 8 I still would appreciate all corrections and any comments. Roger A. Rozendal rogroz@swbell.net
