    3. I am trying to confirm an 8 January 1735 birth date for Catherine Caissie dit Roger, daughter of Michel Caissie and his first wife Catherine Poirier, who married 1750 Jean-Baptiste Bergeron, son of Barthélemy Bergeron & Marguerite Dugas. Does anyone have a documented source for this date? Roger A. Rozendal rogroz@swbell.net

    3. caissie is a common franco version of surname Casey. Immigrants to Acadia came in as casey and soon became cassie . does that help? 3. You make it sound so simple. The Caissie do not come from "Casey immigrants". That surname is given only to some of the descendants of Roger Kuessy (1671 Census in Acadia). He is also the ancestor of the Caissey, Caissy, Quessy and a few other spellings I came across in my research. Casey is simply another version of the Gaelic surname O'Catasais. So Caissie is not just another spelling for Casey. In Acadia it started as Kuessy, at one point was also Quessy, and in 1776 it came out as Cassie. You say Casey immigrants; it was one only immigrant - I prefer settler - of Irish nationality (the description in the deposition by Roger in the witchcraft trial of Campagna). Roger, who I believe was the first Irishman by any name to settle in what is now Canada, and his children were known as Kuessy (1671); Chessy (1701); Roger (1703); Keney and Queney (1707); Kessis (1714); Kessy (1741); Quessi, Quessy, Caissy and Cayssy (1752); Kasey and Casie (1755) and Cassie (1776). All this to say that over a century after Roger Kuessy's arrival, the full name Caissie had not yet made its appearance. It is not a case of "casey (who) soon became cassie". In an effort to make it easier for genealogy research, many books have given the spelling Caissie to the first generation of descendants of Roger (even Stephen White has done so in his Dictionnaire) but that spelling only came much later. It is today by far the most common spelling for Roger's descendants.
