    1. [ACADIAN-CAJUN] Re: Materne/Matherne
    2. All of the Mathernes have descended from Johann Adam Matern, an immigrant to Louisiana under the auspices of John Law, recorded in Louisiana records as being from Rosenheim in Upper Alsace. According to Al Robichaux's research, there is no Rosenheim in either the departments of Bas-Rhin or Haut-Rhin, however, a town by the name of Rosheim can be found in the department of Bas Rhin. Al did find a marriage of one Johannes Adam Matern, son of Petri Matern, who married July 9, 1720 in the parish of St. Nicolas of Haguenau in Bas Rhin, to Eva Gros. If this is our Jean Adam Materne, then his wife, Eva Gros must have died on the voyage or shortly after their arrival in Louisiana. Children of record are the issue of Jean Adam Materne and Regina Koenig. Jean Adam Materne's name did not appear on any of the ship lists to Louisiana between 1718 - 1722. He was listed on the 1724 census of the German Coast as a Catholic, weaver, with wife, a nursing infant, two sisters-in-law ages 18 and 20. In 1726, he was again listed on a census with a wife and two children. Again, in 1731, he was listed, with a wife a three children, residing at the village of the Germans. Hans Adam Matern was buried in the cemetery of the German Coast church on November 16, 1739. Regina Konig, his widow, remarried on June 6, 1740 to Barthelemie Zifert.
