Acadian poet named lieutenant-governor of New Brunswick Posted 08-2-2003 http://www.cbc.ca/artsCanada/stories/quickhits210803 FREDERICTON - Prime Minister Jean Chrétien appointed Acadian poet and Université de Moncton professor Herménégilde Chiasson New Brunswick's new lieutenant-governor Friday. The announcement took place just before Acadian cultural holiday celebrations began last weekend. Born in Saint-Simon on the Acadian Peninsula, Chiasson is a celebrated member of New Brunswick's cultural community. Holding degrees from l'Université de Moncton, Mount Allison University, New York State University and the Sorbonne, Chiasson's career has ranged from director, playwright and journalist to professor, gallery director and arts curator. Chiasson's publishing credits include plays, books, magazine articles and poetry anthologies, including Conversations, which won the Governor General's Literary Award for Poetry (French) in 1999. He was awarded the prix France-Acadie in 1986 and 1992, and named a Chevalier de l'Ordre français des arts et letters.
