    1. [ACADIAN-CAJUN] Re: Family Crest and Heraldry
    2. With Permisson from List Administrator: Hi List Members, I recently discovered a gentleman that makes Sterling Silver Family Crest (devices) and ordered one from him of my Original d'Amours Family Crest, granted by King Charles VII of France in 1453. They can be made with a pin back, lapel back or necklace loop. I ordered the pin back and he engraved on the back "Granted by King Charles VII, 1453". I am very, very pleased with it and thought that some of you may be interested also. He is very resonable on price and his work is quality. A very nice gentleman to deal with and all I did was send him a copy of my crest, that I found on the internet. I thought that it would be great to have and wear to the CMA 2004, if you are attending next year or just anytime. I also plan to have all of my other surname crests done by him and put in a box frame, for display in my home, when not wearing them. His name is Robert Wodruff and he is in Ogden, Utah. If interested, he can be reached at his web site: http://home.mindspring.com/~notfrmmars/ Linda Louviere d'Amours

    2. Judy Riffel
    3. I saw the show, too. While it made a good story, there were some significant holes in his theory for explaining why the man left New Orleans for Natchez. In 1830, Louisiana passed a law that newly freed slaves had to leave the state. This didn't apply to him, but it did to his wife. He jumped to the conclusion that the man left Louisiana for love. There are two big problems with that theory. Rather than leave, most newly freed slaves just got permission to stay which he could have easily done. The other was that Mississippi, and most other southern states, had the same law prohibiting free people of color from moving into their state. There are a couple of good books on the subject. I recommend two by Judith Schafer, (1) Slavery, the Civil Law and the Supreme Court of Louisiana and (2) Becoming free, remaining free: manumission and enslavement in New Orleans. Both were published by LSU Press. Many of these people were skilled craftsmen and artisans, many were educated in Europe in literature and the arts, and they contributed greatly to the culture and history of our city and state. 2. LOUISIANA PATRIOTS 1776-1783 (General Bernardo de Galvez and the Louisiana Patriots) published by DAR/1994 There has been more proven since that time. But you really have to get documentation to prove your ancestry to any of these men who served under Gen Galvez, which is sometimes difficult to do. There are a number of books to read if your interested. (2 below) There are more books available. 1. Spanish Records, List of men under Gen. Galvez in his campaign against the British 1779-C. 2. Cajun
    3. One major problem with the militia lists that have been published re DAR/SAR membership is that there isn't any specific lists of those who actually fought under Galvez during the 1779 campaign. Some history books provide valuable information. For example, "They Tasted Bayou Water" has the names of those who went from the new settlement of New Iberia to Manchac in early 1779 to fight. 2. Larry & Margaret Broussard
    3. Just wanted to let you know that I have uploaded my Bossier file to RootsWeb. I know Bossier isn't Acadian but there are LOTS of Acadians in the file. Thought some of you might like to look at it. I think I did a pretty good job of documentation, but I'm sure it isn't complete. I have all of my surnames in separate files and just recently did a quicky file of all of the ancestors together. Talk about an eye-opener. Printed a chart for a visual look at it. My Bossier family up one side and my Martin family up the other. There was a huge block of the same people that showed up on both sides, when the Martins, Breaux, Bossiers, Hotards married brothers, sisters, cousins. Just didn't realize it included so many people. Just interesting. Well, I hope you enjoy the site. Margaret Broussard http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=maggieb5&id=I1504
