Hi everyone, A couple of things. I made a change in our list settings today. I switched to reply to the list rather than the person when you hit reply. To send a response to a person instead of the list you will need delete the list name and paste and copy in the person's email address. This is being done to help encourage conversation on the list and to help those who so often after posting receive two copies of messages. More and more lists at RootsWeb have been changing to this system. If after a fair trial I feel it's it's not in the list's best interest I will change it back. I do think this is a good way for lists to work. I hope it doesn't stop people from replying to others. We valve everyone's imput on family lines and opinions. The only way this can be overided by you is if you have your email set up in the "reply to" field. That will always overide RootsWeb. It's under tools then account then property link if you have Outlook Express. That field should be empty unless you want people to reply to an address different than the one you are using. Also please check your email settings under options, and then "send" link. Make sure that the box is unchecked next to please add to address book anyone I reply to. This protects many and stops your mailbox being full with a lot of unwanted addresses. This brings me to the main reason for writing today. I usually try to avoid the virus debates on lists I admin. But I feel a reminder is needed to all. Please be sure to have virus protection on your computer. Also it is highly recommended to have Firewall protection if you surf the net. When a virus hits a computer, one thing it does is grabs addresses out of email boxes. It then forges the addresses and sends itself all over. Most people don't realize that the name that is in the From slot is 99.9 % of the time an innocent person with a clean computer. Sometimes they don't go to the address book, one not to long ago skipped the mailbox and grabbed messages that were in the inbox. It would be great if everyone spent just a couple of moments reading Rootsweb's tutorial on viruses/worms: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/virus.html Consider browsing and joining if you have virus questions Virus-Discussion-L. http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Internet_Help/VIRUS-DISCUSSION.html Please keep your virus protection updated!! I have been personally bombarded by attacks. Over 800 two days ago. My Norton showed only 15 attacks so far today. Please Please everyone, do your part to protect yourself and others. Thank you, Margy List Admin.
Hi, This place is a beautiful example of the old stone architecture seen throughout Quebec. The last owner and namesake for Moulin Michel was Joseph-Alfred Michel, the second cousin of my grandmother. Last year almost to the day, I had an opportunity to visit the mill - it was closed for the season, but the administrative staff let my mother and I tour it when we told them we were cousins. We took pictures of pictures of this Joseph-Alfred Michel and some interior shots of the building as well as exterior shots of the grounds and buildings. On weekends during the summer one can tour and have a breakfast/brunch of galettes/crepes and sausages. I hope to get back there next year when it is open. I have the lineage for Joseph-Alfred Michel - contact me offlist if you connect to this family. He descends from Joseph Michel and Madeleine Comeau's son Francois Michel m. Marguerite Pepin. Hello to all, Haven't written in a while. Hope everyone is ready for Fall....I know I certainly am. Would appreciate some kind soul with access to ADNO records to do a look-up for me please? Have found much on my 'Spaniard in Acadia'' , Jean Gusman, but now I need some help with his wife. His wife was 'Aglaide Favre' born ca. 1839 in New Orleans. I have recently learned she is aka A. Victoria Roth, Adelaide Favre and Adelaide Roth. Much thanks in advance, Marsha in South Mississippi

All of the Mathernes have descended from Johann Adam Matern, an immigrant to Louisiana under the auspices of John Law, recorded in Louisiana records as being from Rosenheim in Upper Alsace. According to Al Robichaux's research, there is no Rosenheim in either the departments of Bas-Rhin or Haut-Rhin, however, a town by the name of Rosheim can be found in the department of Bas Rhin. Al did find a marriage of one Johannes Adam Matern, son of Petri Matern, who married July 9, 1720 in the parish of St. Nicolas of Haguenau in Bas Rhin, to Eva Gros. If this is our Jean Adam Materne, then his wife, Eva Gros must have died on the voyage or shortly after their arrival in Louisiana. Children of record are the issue of Jean Adam Materne and Regina Koenig. Jean Adam Materne's name did not appear on any of the ship lists to Louisiana between 1718 - 1722. He was listed on the 1724 census of the German Coast as a Catholic, weaver, with wife, a nursing infant, two sisters-in-law ages 18 and 20. In 1726, he was again listed on a census with a wife and two children. Again, in 1731, he was listed, with a wife a three children, residing at the village of the Germans. Hans Adam Matern was buried in the cemetery of the German Coast church on November 16, 1739. Regina Konig, his widow, remarried on June 6, 1740 to Barthelemie Zifert. Hi Jackie - by 1760 almost all Acadians were living in exile or in prisons [or in hiding]. It is not that likely that this couple would have married in Acadia. Bona Arsenault has Joseph Michel born 1735 and having married abt 1755 to Madeleine Comeau. This Joseph was the son of Pierre Michel and Marie-Anne Guilbeau/Guilbault and Madeleine Comeau would have been the daughter of François Comeau and Anne Lord/Laure. Source: Port-Royal, Volume 2 Joseph Michel was in St-Pierre-les-Becquets, Quebec in 1760. His wife, Madeleine Comeau was buried in Gentilly, Quebec on 3 September 1816. Bona lists the following children for this couple: Francois and Jean born 1760 Genevieve 1762 Madeleine 1764 Marguerite 1766 Pierre 1768 Jacques 1770 Charles-Auguste 1772 Marie-Joseph 1776. This list may not be complete and I would try to have all of the above information verified through parish registers or work by people like Stephen White. Is there any correlation between this name, MATHERNE, and MATURIN and/or DAVID/DAVIDE? There were some families in the Natchitoches Parish area, mid to late 1700s that seemed to use the name MATURIN and DAVID interchangebly. Or was one the "dit" of the other? thank you, Susan
Hi. Hoping someone can clear this up for me. I was browsing the site below and ran into this page of surnames. It says the ones in red are Acadian, green Cajun but not Acadian http://www.acadian-cajun.com/surnamr.htm One name listed is Matherne. It is in red. I thought this family was from Germany. Is the listing on the site correct? Thanks, Margy

We were part of the Diocese of Quebec. The surviving early ecclesiastical records of the Parish of Les Allemands (Now St. Charles Parish) are now housed at the Archives of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Prior to being called in by the Archdiocese for archiving, all parish registers were housed in the individual parish churches, the old parish records being housed at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Destrehan, which is across the river from the original German Coast church. There was a fire at the church rectory in the late 1800's, and all but the first register was lost. The Louisiana State Museum has photocopies (actually reverse microfilm negative copies) of the actual early surviving St. Charles church records, erroneously known as "The Little Red Church Records." When I asked to look at them a couple of years ago, the archivist didn't know what I was talking about. I explained to her what they were and that I had researched the records some years before when the State Museum library was on St. Anne St. in New Orleans. She disappeared, and then came back with an ordinary box, saying that that was all she had. I was with a friend, and when we opened the box, we found very bad photocopies of the negative microfilm copies. I looked through them, and halfway through the box, I found the stack of negative copies. The archivist didn't know what they were, and didn't even know they were there. She took the bad photocopies out and threw them in a wastebasket. We asked if we could have them and she gave us permission to take them. My friend has them, but really, they are very hard to read, as you can imagine - a bad photocopy of a negative photocopy of a 260 year old record!!! But priceless, nevertheless. If you go to the mint to view these, remember - make an appointment, and explain in detail what you want and insist that they are there, because they are!!! Early issues of the New Orleans Genesis, the quarterly publication of the Genealogical Research Society of New Orleans, has abstracts of these records. They are also abstracted in the Archives of the Archdiocese of New Orleans books. The actual records, viewable at the Louisiana State Museum, are so much more interesting and contain more information than the abstracts. Beginning in the early 1770's, some St. Charles records (very few) can be found in the registers of St. John the Baptist Church at Edgard. These are currently housed at the Archdiocese of New Orleans archives, and the abstracts are in their books. After the Spanish Government officially took over 1763, New Orleans became part of the Diocese of Havana. For a most complete, thoroughly researched account of the churches at the German Coast, see Albert J. Robichaux's "German Coast Families." Barbara Allen Metairie, LA

Thanks As it turns out, this is the couple I was seeking. I dug through the PDRH until I found their last child born outside of Acadia...Marie-Josephe. Then I found the names of family going back to Acadia, but still no Henriette, and few dates. Also found the marriage of a brother, of Henriette's, Alexis. One brick at a time. Thank you very much Jayne. Gentilly, St-Pierre-les-Becquets, St-Jean-Deschaillons and Lotbinière are on the south shore of the St-Lawrence river while Champlain is on the north shore. All these places are between Trois-Rivieres and Quebec city. Thank you again Jayne, Paul ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jayne A.
