Hi Rita and Listers, Here is information from Stephen White regarding Marguerite and Pierre Dugas. <<Rita's question has a rather simple answer. The list of refugees arriving at St-Malo in 1759 mentions that Marie-Rose Daigre, daughter of Olivier Daigre and Angélique Doiron, went to live with her "uncle Pierre Dugas at Plouër." This Pierre Dugas was the one who married Marguerite Daigre, so Marguerite was Olivier Daigre's sister. Marie-Rose Daigre's brother Miniac later wound up on Belle-Île-en-Mer, where his deposition in 1767 states that his paternal grandparents were Pierre Daigre and Madeleine Gautrot. Pierre and Madeleine were of course Marguerite Daigre's parents, too. The rest of the ancestry can be found in the first part of the DGFA, beginning at pages 448 (Daigre) and 695 (Gautrot).>> Lucie LeBlanc Consentino Acadian & French Canadian Ancestral Home www.acadian-home.org Am-Can Gen Soc www.acgs.org CMA 2004 - www.cma2004.com Grand-Pré - http://www.grand-pre.com/ www.umoncton.ca/etudeacadiennes/centre/cea.html
Thanks Stanley, SAW p. 439 indicates that this Marguerite [daughter of Joseph & Magdeleine Gautrot] married Paul CYR s/o Louis & Marie Josephe Michel in Port LaJoye on 12 nov. 1753. :-( I wish it were, though...sure would simplify things for me...hehehe. Hi Jackie and Listers, This post is a correction to what I had posted earlier on this couple and comes from Stephen White. ;o) <<Abraham Vigneau was born at Beaubassin on Sept. 2, 1733, and was baptized there on the same day. He and Marie Bourg had their marriage contract drawn up by the notary Louis de Courville at Fort Beauséjour on Jan. 24, 1755. Their marriage presumably took place soon after, but no record of that has survived. Abraham and Marie went to live at Baie-Verte, on what is now the Northumberland Strait, where most of Abraham's family was settled. They and all the rest of the Jacques Vigneau clan at Baie-Verte were taken prisoners in September 1755 and loaded aboard the schooner Jolly Phillip, which took a total of 129 Acadians to Georgia, leaving Chignecto on the following Oct. 13th. (We know that the Vigneaus were on this ship because the ship's captain, John [or Jonathan] Waite, noted a few births and deaths of Vigneau family members in the ship's log. These notes were published in the Cahiers de la Société historique acadienne, vol III, 1970, p 211) The Vigneaus did not long stay in Georgia. Determined to return to Acadia, and furnished with passports by the colony's governor, who was happy enough to see them leave, they obtained a boat and set out to return up the coast. Unfortunately, during the time that they were travelling, war was officially declared, and the group was stopped on Cape Cod in 1756. The entire group was detained in Massachusetts, in various towns. The baptismal records of Abraham's children Henriette and Isaac specify that they were both born in Roxbury, in 1760 and 1762, so it is known that he and his family were there during those years. All the Vigneaus and the rest of the group who came from Georgia were listed at "Boston" in August 1763, but "Boston" in this context really means all of Massachusetts, the entire area under the jurisdiction of the governor and general court that sat in Boston. Realizing that returning to Acadia meant staying under the British, the Vigneaus very soon set out for the one bit of territory remaining to France in North America, the islands of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, where they were the first Acadians refugees to arrive, early in October 1763. Abraham Vigneau and Marie Bourg and the three children who had been born to them while they were in Massachusetts, Marie (Rébecca), Henriette, and Isaac, were in this group, and they were accompanied by Marie's first cousin, Pierre dit Paul Bourg, who was the second male "child" listed with them the preceding August. Miquelon soon became overcrowded with Acadian refugees, and the French government ordered an evacuation in 1767. In the autumn of that year, Abraham and Marie boarded the snow Le Saint-Jacques, bound for France, with their children, now five in number, two more daughters, Modeste and Anastasie, having been born on Miquelon. The following year, however, they returned to Miquelon. Life resumed. Four more daughters were born to them, Rosalie, Jeanne, Apollonie, and Marie-Marguerite-Madeleine, making a family of nine children in all. Then in 1778 as another war was raging the British captured Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, and deported the local population to France. Abraham Vigneau and his family went to La Rochelle aboard the Betsy. By 1784, Abraham Vigneau was back on Miquelon. But now his family was smaller. Marie Bourg and their only son, Isaac, did not come back from this third exile. So, Abraham was left a single parent, with a household filled with daughters, eight in all. The oldest girls were already young women, and they began to find themselves husbands. In the fall of 1784, the eldest, Rébecca, married another Acadian, Laurent Cyr. A year and a half later, the third girl, Modeste, married a young Frenchman named Jean-Pierre Garnache. The records concerning the Garnaches provide the best indication of the timing of the family's next move. Modeste and Jean-Pierre's eldest child was baptized at Miquelon on March 6, 1787, and their second child was baptized at Bécancour on June 5, 1788. So, they moved between those two dates, most likely in the autumn of 1787. And the godmother of that second child was Abraham Vigneau's second daughter, Henriette, who had not yet married, so she must have accompanied her sister, and it is quite likely that the whole family moved at that time, with the sole exception of Rébecca, who waited until 1789 to join them. The records concerning the members of this family in the first years after their arrival in what is now Nicolet County are mostly found in the registers of Bécancour and Nicolet, but it would appear that it was actually in what became in 1802 the parish of St-Grégoire that they settled. And it was at St-Grégoire that Abraham Vigneau died on June 13, 1802. The record says he was seventy-seven, but he was in fact only sixty-eight. In all the records concerning this family, I have never seen Abraham called "Laverdure." Many of the Vigneaus were known by the nickname "Maurice," which comes from the given name of Abraham's grandfather, who was the first of the line in Acadia. So, Abraham Vigneau's personal history is much more complicated than some secondary sources may suggest. Even more detail will probably eventually be added to the above story as research goes on. The Acadians who lived on Miquelon were a group that was much beset by misfortunes and upheavals, but their descendants are fortunate in that they are one of the few groups about whom so many very detailed records were kept and are still preserved. >> Lucie LeBlanc Consentino Acadian & French Canadian Ancestral Home www.acadian-home.org <http://www.acadian-home.org/> Am-Can Gen Soc www.acgs.org <http://www.acgs.org/> CMA 2004 - www.cma2004.com Grand-Pré - http://www.grand-pre.com/ www.umoncton.ca/etudeacadiennes/centre/cea.html <http://www.umoncton.ca/etudeacadiennes> <http://www.grand-pre.com/>

THE SWISS LANDRY FAMILY LINE There is a Swiss Landry family line in Louisiana whose progenitors were Jean Jacques Henry Landry son of Jean Jacques Landry and Susanne Catherine Frasse of the canton of Neuchatel, Switzerland, who according to his passport, left the canton of Neuchatel, Switzerland arrived in Philadelphia in 1817 at age 27. Jean Jacques Henry was born sometime in 1790 in the canton of Neuchatel, Switzerland. He grew up in Switzerland where he was trained to be a wheelwright. He left Switzerland and traveled to Amsterdam, sometime before 1817, when according to his passport that is in the possession of Ms. Orey B. LaCoste of Lafayette, he arrived in Philadelphia to work as a wheelwright. He married Susanne Celestine Sandoz, who was also a native of the canton of Neuchatel, Switzerland. Suzanne was the daughter of Jean Henri Sandoz (Jean Jacques Sandoz and Sara Marguerite Diacon) and Suzanne Amez Droz (Abram Henri Droz de Villiers and Susanne Marguerite Maumary), of Dombresson, canton of Neuchatel, Switzerland, where she was born on 30 December, 1803. She arrived in America in 1829 with her parents and her 4 brothers. Jean and Suzanne settled in St. Martinville in the 1830s, and their progeny are concentrated in the Lafayette, Louisiana area. The records assume that Jean Jacques Henri Landry and Susanne Celestine Sandoz made their home in Lafayette sometime in the early 30's. Roger, About the parents of Marie Josephe Thibodeau [spouse of Francois Pitre...#6 child of Pierre Pitre & Agathe Doucet].... I have a different set of parents for Marie Josephe Thibodeau (Jean Baptiste & Marie Josèphe Lanoue) but I must admit my sources for this couple being her parents are, at best, quite shakey :-). Could you share your sources on the parentage of Marie Josephe Thibodeau? She and Francois Pitre are in my husband's direct line [5th gr.grandparents], so I would really appreciate any help in making sure that I have the right couple as her parents. Many Thanks, Rita -----Original Message----- From: Roger A. It is indicated that Pierre Pitre and his family did not come to Louisiana from Halifax in the group led by Joseph Broussard that arrived in February 1765 and were settled in Attakapas, but were in the second group from Halifax which arrived in June 1765 and part of which were settled at Opelousas. In the 25 April 1766 census at Opelousas is found: Pierre Pitre, 1 boy, 1 girl As to what happened to each member of this family, this is what my research indicates: Pierre Pitre, father, was with his family in 1752 at Chipoudy, imprisoned with his family in Halifax in 1763, came to Louisiana from Halifax arriving in June 1765, and settled in Opelousas where he was recorded in the 1766 census. Pierre is not recorded in the militia lists of 1770 or 1771, (probably too old at 71). However, he also was not listed in the 1771 census at Opelousas and probably died before then. Agatha Doucet was with Pierre in Chipoudy in 1752 and imprisoned with him at Halifax in 1763. Since she is not listed in the 1766 census at Opelousas, she must have died between 12 August 1763 and 25 April 1765. Unknown if she made it to Louisiana. 1) Marguerite, born in 1727, was probably at Chipoudy in 1752 and may have been at Halifax in 1763. Nothing else is known of her fate. 2) Jean-Baptiste, born ca 1732, married first ca 1754 Marie-Anne Thibodeau and had 2 daughters, Theotiste born ca 1755 and Elisabth born 25 Sep 1757. Jean-Baptiste and his family escaped to Quebec where his wife and his 2 daughters died. Marie-Anne died 9 Jan 1759. On 31 Mar 1761, he remarried Marie-Anne Surette, daughter of Joseph Surette & Marguerite Theriot (White p. 1476). They were married at St. Pierre les Becquets, Quebec. (Les Becquets is on the south side of the St. Lawrence River about 40 kms. downriver from Trois Rivieres). 3) Marie, born in 1734, married ca 1755 Joseph Saulnier, son of Jacques Saulnier? & Anne Hebert? (White p. 1446). A son, Francois, was born 11 May 1757 and a daughter, Agnes, was born ca ?. Listed as prisoners 12 August 1763 at Halifax are: Joseph Saunaie, his wife, 2 children This family may be: Joseph Saulnier Marie Pitre, his wife Francois Agnes Joseph came to Louisiana possibly in the group from Halifax led by Philippe Lachaussee that arrived in September 1765. However, his wife and children do not seem to have made it to Louisiana. At least in the 9 Apr 1766 census at Cabanocey is found: Joseph Saunier 27 Anne, widow (Basil) Babin, sister 25 Lize Babin, her daughter 3 Marie (Babin), daughter 2 Joseph married again 6 November 1767 Marie Landry, (widow of Alexis Granger), daughter of Pierre Landry & Clair Babin (White p. 930). 4) Pierre, born ca 1734, married ca 1756 Marguerite Bourg, daughter of Charles Bourg & Anne Boudrot (White p. 230). Whether Pierre made it to Louisiana is unkown, but Marguerite did, although exactly when and how is unknown. In the 1769 census at Attakapas is found: Amand Thibodeau 29 Gertrude Bourg Blandine 2 Isaac 1 Marguerite Bourg 25 (sister of Gertrude) Marie Gautreau 5 (orphan of Marie-Louise Thibodeau, sister of Amand). In the 1771 Attakappas census Marguerite is still listed with her sister as "Widow Bourque 27". She married Charles Guilbeau 20 Nov 1775 (Hebert v. 1A p. 99). 5) Catherine, born 1739, was at Chipoudy in 1752 with her father, imprisoned at Halifax in 1763 with him, came to Louisiana in 1765 and in the 25 April 1766 census at Opelousas was with him. Ca 1770, Catherine married Pierre Joubert, a non-Acadian, and in the 1771 census at Opelousas is found: Pierre Joubert dit Bellerose 39; his wife 28 (Catherine Pitre); son 1 month. They are listed next door to her brother, Francois. 6) Francois, born ca 1746, was at Chipoudy in 1752 with his father, imprisoned at Halifax in 1763 with him, came to Louisiana in 1765 and was in the 25 April 1766 census at Opelousas with him. Francois married ca 1769 Marie-Josephe Thibodeau, daughter of Pierre Thibodeau & Francoise Saulnier (White p. 1521). In the 1771 census at Opelousas is found: Francois Pitre 23, his wife 13 (Marie-Josephe Thibodeau), 1 boy 1 (Francois). 7) Boy, born ?, was probably at Chipoudy in 1752 and may have been at Halifax in 1763 with his father. Nothing else is known of his fate. Joseph Surette, born 22 May 1712, son of Pierre Surette & Jeanne Pellerin (White p. 1476) married 17 Oct 1730 in Grande Pre Marguerite Theriot, daughter of Claude Theriot & Marguerite Cormier (White p. 1500). Children: 1) Joseph born 28 May 1732 2) Marie-Anne born ca 1732 3) Pierre born 25 Sep 1736 4) Jean-Baptiste born ca 1741 5) Etienne born ca 1744 6) Marguerite born ca 1746 As to what happened to each member of this family, this is what my research indicates: Joseph Surette died ca 1750 (White p. 1476) and Marguerite Theriot died 2 Jan 1758 (White p. 1500). 1) Joseph married ca 1761 Isabelle Babineau, duaghter of Jean-Pierre Babineau & Isabelle Breau (White p. 65). In the 24 August 1763 list of prisoners at Fort Beausejour is found: Joseph Suret Ysabelle (Babineau) Suret They are listed next to Jean Babineau (widower), father of Isabelle, and the rest of her siblings. After release from prison, they remained in New Brunswick. 2) Marie-Anne married Jean-Baptiste Pitre (see above). 3) Pierre married ca 1761 Marie Thibodeau, daughter of Paul Thibodeau & Marguerite Trahan (White p. 1520). In the 11 Oct 1762 list of prisoners at Fort Edward is found: Pre Suret jun 3 (members) These are: Pierre Surette age 26 Marie Thibodeau, his wife Marie-Anne Surette born 24 Feb 1762 Pierre came to Louisiana with Joseph Broussard arriving in February 1765. One of the first things he did was have his daughter baptised on 4 Mar 1765 (ADNOSR v. 2, p. 259). On 5 April 1765, Pierre received a receipt for Canadian money from Maxent. They settled at Attakapas where a son, Augustin, was born 19 Jun 1765 (Hebert v. 1A pp. 735-736). It seems both Pierre and Augustin died between 19 Jun 1765 and 24 April 1766 because they are not present in the 1766 census. Sometime prior to the 1769 Attakapas census, Marie Thibodeau married Jean-Baptiste Semer. 4) Jean-Baptiste: I have no further information on him. 5) Etienne died ca 1758 6) Marguerite married 20 Jan 1766 in Lachine Quebec Jacques Tessier, son of Jacques Tessier & Marie-Louise Monet. They remained in Quebec. Roger A. Rozendal rogroz@swbell.net ==== ACADIAN-CAJUN Mailing List ==== http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/CAN/ACADIAN-CAJUN.html This is the link to our archives. Roger A. Rozendal rogroz@swbell.net
Does anyone have any information about Abraham Laverdure-Vigneault m Marie Bourg, and where he went from Acadia? I have found some information that some of his later children were born in New England. Two of his children were married in the 1790's in Becancour, and one m. in 1795 in Trois Rivieres, but no information anywhere else as to the family's whereabouts after leaving Acadia. Jackie
Does anyone on this list have any information about "DeJean Freres & Co." There are many references to them on St. Landry Courthouse documents during the mid 1800s. They appear to have been either bondsmen or notaries and their name was always followed by a seal on documents. Would love to know more about this. I am descended from DeJean family from BreauxBridge/Cecilia area. Thanks for any help. Myra Guidry Clay
Good morning, My "Petit Larousse Illustré" for 1991 tells us that Pont-à-Mousson (54,700) is today the capital of a township in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle, situated near the borders with Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. This department was formed in 1871 by merging the 2 departments given to France by the treaty of Francfort. So far from the coast, I would not hold much hope of finding a connection.
