    3. For immediate release Communities unite for Congrès mondial acadien 2004 Halifax – February 5, 2004 – Congrès mondial acadien 2004 (CMA) brought together over 40 participants representing host regions of Congrès for a two-day training session in Tatamagouche on February 1 and 2. CMA 2004, a world-class event which gives an opportunity to Acadians from around the world to meet, exchange and celebrate the Acadian culture, felt it was necessary to bring together the communities to create a provincial team. « This large-scale project has never been attempted in the past in Nova Scotia. We felt it was essential for all groups concerned to come together to exchange their ideas and challenges », explains Vaughne Madden, General Manager of Congrès. Exchange they did! The participants were treated to a variety of presentations on Congrès, from its history to marketing and logistics strategies. There was also an opportunity for the representatives to share their community’s projects and successes. More than 2,000 individual activities are planned for CMA 2004. Mostly organised by volunteers and community groups. Their content to CMA’s programming is essential. “ We are assured that we have a strong provincial team of knowledgeable and dedicated people working to make Congrès an international success”, continues Ms. Madden. For Megan Moore, Community Development Officer with the Western Valley Development Authority, the experience was eye-opening, “ It was a great opportunity to meet and network with the CMA 2004 team and everyone that is working towards making the celebrations a success. I had a wonderful time. It was great to learn what is happening all over the province, we often get too focused on our regions. Getting to see the entire picture was very beneficial.” - more - One of the greatest successes of the weekend was a greater cooperation between the two linguistic communities of Nova Scotia. Both the French and English communities came together to build a better project. “I can honestly say I think the work we our doing between the two communities is ground-breaking. Congrès will definitely bring together our communities and promote a better understanding of the overall Acadian culture”, exclaimed an enthusiastic Madden. Representatives from all Acadian regions were present, including, Argyle, Clare, Isle Madame, Larry’s River, and Chéticamp. As well, representatives from what are known as historical Acadian communities joined in, including the South Shore, Annapolis Valley, Amherst and Truro. The team is well on their way to creating the biggest cultural event in Nova Scotia. 1. [ACADIAN-CAJUN] Sailor from La Belle [One of LaSalle's Ships] Buried after 318 Years
    2. Cajun
    3. The following article is in today's Dallas Morning News Stanley LeBlanc www.thecajuns.com French sailor honored for historic role 318 years after death, seaman found in 1996 is laid to rest By PETE SLOVER / The Dallas Morning News AUSTIN - On a hillside at the Texas State Cemetery, an arthritic, middle-aged 17th-century seaman became something more Tuesday: a symbolic standard bearer for Franco-Texian solidarity. Dignitaries of France and Texas gathered to bury the remains of a seaman recovered from a French ship that sank in Matagorda Bay 318 years ago, projecting attributes on the deceased worthy of the formidable monument unveiled aside his grave. "All 22 million Texans are his children. Because his legacy is our legacy," Texas Secretary of State Geoff Connor - the state's top foreign protocol official - told a crowd of about 300 people. "He symbolizes all that is best about the human spirit: boldness." No less lofty was the verbiage from French Ambassador Jean-David Levitte, who traveled from Washington, D.C., for the ceremony. "As a French citizen, I'm deeply moved to see so many Texans present to pay tribute to an unknown French sailor who participated in the founding moments of Texas," he said. "Let me suggest a moment of silence in recognition of the courage and the determination of these people who crossed the ocean to explore the new world without knowing where they were going and what they were experiencing." He also used the occasion to recall the mutual wartime aid shared by France and Texas, as well as France's role as the first power to recognize the newly independent Texas as a nation in the 1830s. The sailor's remains were buried in a specially designed, argon-gas-filled box, donated by a local funeral home and intended to preserve the bones for possible future study. That vessel was sealed within a vault inscribed "C. Barange," the name by which the sailor is known (derived from markings on a pewter cup found near his body). His ship, La Belle, was the only one of four still along the Texas coast at the tail end of the ill-fated voyage of explorer Robert Cavelier Sieur De La Salle. La Belle sank in a 1686 storm, after its crew exhausted its fresh water supply waiting for LaSalle to return from an overland trip in search of the mouth of the Mississippi. Texas Historical Commission archeologists excavating the ship found the sailor's remains in 1996, and subsequent study suggested he had died of thirst after he crawled onto a resting place - a coil of rope in the hold. The bones revealed the dead sailor lived a life of heavy lifting, bad dental hygiene and at least one face-smashing brawl. No descendants have been found. The governments of Texas, the United States and France decided jointly on the state cemetery burial, an honor traditionally bestowed on elected officials and others who have contributed to the state's history. Arriving guests were greeted by dulcet, 16th-century French recorder tunes, played on period instruments. After introductions and tributes, a bilingual Roman Catholic priest in antique brocade vestments sprinkled holy water and offered burial rites in French and English.

Stanley LeBlanc www.thecajuns.com Hi Stanley, Thanks you so much, I neglected to notice that in my file.. My records show that Mathurin was ba. 4 April 1784, Ascension and he died 14 Nov. 1790 at St. Bernard Okay, so that puts her Brigitte in St. Bernard in 1790.. I would really love to know where she was buried. That must be when she got together with Jean Guzman sometime after that and in St. Bernard. My theory is that she is not the Mother of the Jean Guzman that married Marie Candelaria Veillon June 25, 1817, SLC M6, 194. I believe the Jean Guzman that got together with Brigitte Trahan Landry around 1790-1791, was the Jean Guzman that arrived in New Orleans in 1785 aboard that LAmite with his wife, Rose BONNEVE and 2 of their 11 children. I have found documentation where Rose BONNEVIE died in St. Bernard in as BUENAVIDA, ROSE, OCT. 6, 1791, SPOUSE OF JEAN GUSMAN, AGE 50 YEARS, interred SBSB, F1, p10 (St. Bernard Parish, St. Bernard Church)They arrived in New Orleans with only Rosalie Charlotte, born 1765, ba. 3 Oct. 1765 St. Pierre Miquelon and Jean Thomas, born 1783 , ba.. 13 Aug 1783, Chantenay St.. Martin(-Loire-Atl) Fra. Sometime after 1822, the "Jean Guzman' who supposedly is Jean and Brigitte's son, had already married Anne Marie Candelaria Veillon ( in 1817) of St. Bernard Parish and moved his family to Slidell in St. Tammany Parish where the descendants still reside today. The thing is, if Jean is really the son of Jean and Brigitte Trahan, there should be a baptism record or a marriage record as they appear to be very Catholic. At least some sort of record. Since no record can be found, I believe he is the 'Jean Thomas, born 1783 in France, the son of Jean and Rose Bonneve, and that he and Brigida weren't married or at least no record can be found. Any insight at this point will be graciously accepted. Sincerely, Marsha This e-mail was scanned by RAV Antivirus. (www.ravantivirus.com)

March 29, 1787 she married (2) Jean Guzman and had a son Bartolome Gusman > This e-mail was scanned by RAV Antivirus. (www.ravantivirus.com) Hi Don, Thanks for the response. She was in fact married (2) in 1787 to Phillippe Bourier after Etienne died . They had one son, Joseph Raphael, who was ba. Oct. 27, 1788 (ASC-5-20) Witness were Joseph Garsieur and Marie Josephe Landry She got together with 'Gusman' after Boudier/Bourier. I don't know if he died or what happened. If someone out there knows, please let me know? Anyhow, The son they supposedly had was actually, Juan and he was the Father of Bartolome. I believe you may be missing another Juan between Jean and Bartolome. So, Bartolome (my ancestor) would have been the grandson of Gusman and Brigitte. The problem is that, I am intent on disproving that Jean Guzman and Brigitte Trahan Landry were never married and that the son, Juan was not Brigitte Trahan's son. Unfortunately this may not sit well with some of the local family historians. I believe he is the son of Jean Guzman and Rose Bonnevie (Jacque BONNEVIE and Margaret LAURE(Lord)who came to New Orleans in 1785 aboard the L'Amite. According to my research they brought 2 of their 11 children with them, namely, Rosalie Charlotte Guzman, born 1761 St. Pierre Miquelon and a son, Jean Thomas Guzman born 1783 Chantenay St. Martin (Loire Fra). This is the Jean who married Maria Candelaria Veillon in St. Bernard Parish. I have found the marriage record of Rosalie Charlotte GUZMAN, the daughter that arrived in New Orleans, with them.. She in fact married twice according the SLC records By the way, they settled in St. Bernard Parish. Jean Guzman's wife, Rose Bonnevie died and is bured in Terre Aux Boeuf Cemetery in Violet, La., St. Bernard Parish. She is listed in ADNO/SLC records as BUENAVIDA, ROSA. If someone can find a marriage record for Jean Guzman and Brigitte Trahan Landry, please, I would love to be wrong in this case. However, I don't think I am. I have volumes on these folks and am not even close to probing Brigitte Trahan Landry was the Mother of Juan Guzman, born 1783. In fact, it's practically impossible, (because unless a person changes his date of birth) because she was havingg children with Etienne Landry at the same time and she wasn't in St. Bernard Parish then. I see there is some more input. You all don't know how much I appreciate this. Sincerely, Marsha This e-mail was scanned by RAV Antivirus. (www.ravantivirus.com)

    3. Last Wednesday, Sandra Oakley posted the following message on the Acadian-Cajun message board http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/QCB.2ACI/1624 It concerns her grandmother born in Canada in 1904, moved to Mass. at a young age, and subsequently placed in an orphanage. She eventually married Eugene Savard in Michigan. If anyone can help Sandra, please reply to the message board, not this list. Thanks, Maurice Acadian-Cajun board admin
