This has many Acadian/French names in it....hopefully it will be of some help http://www.genealogia.fi/emi/emi74ae.htm I am on a list called [email protected] - it is an extremely informative list - this is where many of the sites I've sent through have come from. My maternal side is from the UK - they have much information for anyone searching that and NATIVE ancestry as well. Have fun, Nova --------------------------------- Relax. Yahoo! Original question was Tee nAg. Do we all agree Tee = Petit = Little? Usually implies a younger relative with same "nickname" My partner was called little nag(ger) by her father & his wife was the Big nagger. Anybody got a different idea? just as they use "beb" for women. (snipped) Could this be Bebe = baby? nEg - same as nickname of Blackie in English? In South Lafourche Parish the word is still used today. I am told that it is an abbreviation for a term used to indicate African-American heritage, but the word is not, and as far as my memory takes me, was never used in a derogatory manner. As a matter of fact, just the opposite. It is used, usually by men, to refer to other men-friends, just as they use "beb" for women. I, too, remember several young men who went by the nickname, Tee Neg. Maybe my definition is wrong? I'd like to be straightened out by those of you who are more familiar with the Cajun dialect. Thanks for making my day. First time I ever got so many responses to a question AND a confirmation of my thoughts. My aunt Nola was called Tee Nag and she was done so affectionately. I don't know why, since she was definitely female in all meanings of the word. Her husband, was large, dark and had many characteristics of our supposed/assumed mixed heritage. I think PERHAPS he had been called neg and when she became his wife she became petite neg. Maybe? comments welcome. And thanks again. Joyce (LeJeune, Ashworth, Berwick) Waters

The posting for the Saskatchewan database prompted me to go searching for a similar site for Alberta and I did find a wonderful site for the Alberta Genealogical Society at http://abgensoc.ca/homestead/index.htm#order . The Society recently completed a multi year project to create an All Name index to the Government archives and offers to obtain copies of the files (from microfilm in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in Edmonton). Go to the site indicated for background information and to search for names in the database. I found listings for five files relating to my great grandfather, Joseph Blanchard, and five of his sons who emigrated from Rhode Island about 1900.
