Re Elton's note that Magdeleine Cormier was in the first group of Acadians - he means the 1764 group of 24 who arrived in New Orleans from New York via Mobile. Lillian Bourgeois in Cabanocey has the marriage of Magdeleine in the section re marriages in Cabanocey and also the marriage of sisters Marie and Marguerite [2nd marriage]. Elton documents on page 69 of his book Vacherie that the marriage contracts were made with the Commandant of St. Charles. Elton's book is a must have! Good Morning Stanley, Rita came to the same conclusion as you and after clearing of the forest of the trees I agree. :-) Thanks for the additional information for Magdeleine as well. I will add the detail to her record. It is possible that her family would not allow the wedding or that she was sent to stay with another relative. Who knows. :-) AS -----Original Message----- From: Stanley LeBlanc [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, March 17, 2006 8:55 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [ACADIAN-CAJUN] Magdeleine Granger's Marriage & Adoptionof her son, Joseph Simon I checked Madeleine Granger. The church at St. James was established in 1770 [there are a few records recorded earlier] so the births for those born earlier are determined by the 1766 and the 1769 census records. The marriages were recorded by the Commandants so these are available. The 1st child baptized at St. James was Antoine-Alexander LeBlanc, son of Simon and Anne Arceneaux, widow Bergeron. He was bt on June 20, 1770. He moved to Attakapas and died in New Iberia on 10/5/1841. Stanley LeBlanc http://www.thecajuns.com
Simon and Madeleine [who married 3/31/1766] had a son named Joseph bn abt 1769 [he was 8 mos old on the 9/14/1769 census]. This Joseph married Emilie Guilbeaux on Aug. 16, 1796 - see Marriage Investigation below. MIRE, Joseph - 28 yrs. old from St. James Parish, Louisiana (Simon & Magdeleine CORMIER) "Informacion de Solteria Producida" - [Marriage Investigation regarding the freedom to marry] dated: 27 July 1796 Emilie GUILLEBAUD - of this parish (Charles & Anne TRAHAN) Wits: Louis CHEMIN - bedo [sacristan] of this parish, assistant witness, Jean FRANC-MERCADE- assistant witness, Bazile LANDRY, Jean Baptiste BRUSARD - the last two between 40-50 yrs. [Usually 2 assisting witnesses and ordinary witnesses]. Fr. Michel Bernard BARRIERE (SM Ch.: Marriage Investigation: Folio D, #5) Joseph and Madeleine Granger apparently had an out-of-wedlock child born in Sept. 1796, a month after he married Emilie. Perhaps this is why there was a Marriage Investigation!
