The Acadian Memorial celebrates the Fête Nationale! On August 15,Acadians around the world will be celebrating la Fête Nationale des Acadiens, the National Day of the Acadians! Come celebrate with us from 9 am to 5:30pm for la Fête, aday chosen in the 19th century by an assembly of Acadians in Canada for its connection to the Assumption and the Virgin Mary, the patron of the Acadians. Honoring our religious and spiritual heritage, the day begins at 9am with a rosary in French led by Joan Broussard to celebrate our Catholic heritage. A program honoring the Mi’kmaw Indians, close allies and intermarried with many Acadians, follow at 10am. Christine Guidry Law and her family have spent the last several years working with folks in Canada to learn more about their ancestry. She will share the traditions and culture of the Mi’kmaw. Mais oui, we`re celebrating our Francophone heritage! Join Mary Guirard and Tommy Guidry from Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site at noon for la bourre (card games) in French. Don`t forget to bring your lunch. Théâtre Cadien returns with vignettes en français at 11:30am and 2:30pm. Prepare for some humor as author Jean François joins us at 3:45pm to read his short stories in French, LesQuatres Saisons de Danté Hébert. Dr. Mark Rees and his team from the Projet Nouvelle-Acadie,New Acadia Project, have been working hard on their summer dig and have some interesting new updates to share. Join us at 1:30pm for an always fascinating briefing by Dr. Rees and his team on their project. Longfellow Evangeline State Historic Site also joins us in the morning to share traditional games and toys for kids of all ages! Come share your pride in your Acadian heritage by joining our annual procession of family name banners. Our procession begins at 4:45pm along the bayou, where we will join up with the Fête Dieu du Tèche, Fr. Michael Champagne and a flotilla of boats celebrating la Fête Dieu du Tèche. This Eucharistic procession begins in Leonville with a Mass in French at 8am and ends with a procession to Notre Dame and St. Martin de Tours Catholic Churches at 4:45pm.
