We Acadian have many many relatives that married "Micmaq" so your ancestors sibs can be almost certain to have related lines. We usually say Micmaq but they can be from all the "tribes" from Maine, through Quebec and up to NewFoundland. metis (lower M) are individuals of mixed heritage who meet a 6 part test. The main ones is to belong to a metis community & share their lifestyle. Metis (Capital M) are Canadian Government recognized communities west of Ontario. I personally have six Amerindian lines before 1710. You will find you have more in common with other "Early French in North America" than your "english" neighbors who you have lived next to for generations. Enough of my high horse. Paul -----Original Message----- From: Leslie Johnson CPC As a beginner, I have been wondering about that. Due to the nature of our ancestors and marrying with the Mi'kmaqs, is it possible that many of us metis? I've seen some indications in the lines, but how do we know for sure? Thanks, Leslie LeBrun Johnson
Great explanation, Paul. I was not aware of the distinction between w and W. Would you mind sharing your Ameriindian lines with us? I'd love to know. I know for sure I have Marie Therese married to Claude Petitpas through their daughter Judith in my father's Burke line. I have several more, but they may be questionable. I'd be interested to see if we intersect anywhere. I do know I show up as having 2% NA on one DNA testing with a further 4% Siberian and 3% NA on another, which leads me to believe that more than Marie Therese has contributed. Also, is there anyone out there with ties to LeCoutre or LeFebre/LeFevre in Nova Scotia via the Channel Islands? This is my paternal great grandmother's line. She was Elizabeth Goswell/Cogswell married to Aime Landry. I've been told her parents were George Goswell (with possible early US American ancestors??) and Jane LeCoutre. I don't think they ever married. But I am interested in Jane's parents. Hope everyone is havivng a great summer. I won't complain about the heat to my LA cousins, but I've been in Paris this summer and it has been hot as blazes. Leaving for Halifax and Cape Breton on Wednesday and I KNOW it will be cooler there!! Very quickly, Paul, I am also a descendant of Claude's brother Jacques through my mother's direct Petitpas line AND a descendant of Claude's second wife, Francoise Lavergne by her marriage to Claude Clerge through their daughter, Anne married to Pierre Landry in my father's paternal line. I will look more closely at what you have posted and will look forward to more. Oh what a tangled web we weave...
