Paul: The mother-in-law is with us for a week at Christmas. She is dominating the house. When the mother goes back to Houston on the 29th, I'll then send the procedures for frying turkeys and a recipe for upscale dirty rice to the list. This is not your grandmother's formulation for dirty rice. The other story is to provide a guide for the families to find their way to midnight mass. The other name you may know is St-Jacques de Cabannoce. The church was named for my 6th great grandfather Jacques Cantrelle patron saint. His two son-in-laws were the first Commandants (like in Zorro) during the transfer period from France to Spain. There should be several news shorts on the building & lighting of the bonfires on the New Orleans & Baton Rouge TV stations. Some are Baton Rouge www.wafb.com/-CBS www.wbrz.com/ -ABC www.nbc33tv.com/- NBC New Orleans www.abc26.com/ - ABC www.wdsu.com - NBC www.wwltv.com/- CBS www.fox8live.com - Fox? The national stations news may also pick up the stories Paul ------------------------------ Message: 4 Date: Fri, 24 Dec 2010 11:29:50 -0500 From: Paul L LeBlanc <pleblan@aim.com> Subject: [ACADIAN] Frying Turkeys To: acadian@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <8CD719EEC1BCA83-10C0-1AA02@webmail-m012.sysops.aol.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" A (semi-) new tradition in south Louisiana (& east Texas) is the outdoor frying of small turkeys. You take a 8 to 12 pound thawed turkey, inject it with seasoning and deep fry in peanut oil. Before I moved up here caused by Hurricane Katrina. At noon, Nubby would shut down the Auto Repair shop and start the butane burners. All the guys would come by with their turkeys and a case of beer. Sometime during the afternoon your turkey would take it's turn in the fryers. This was one of the few times of the year the blue and white collars would get together. The "blues" provided the place & equipment. One of the White collars was the local Planters rep. & he provided the peanut oil. I was designated driver so would provide "taxi" service bringing the gang home. About 4 PM the wives would show up and pick up the last of the straggles. Since moving up I have to become "an American" and have to order a fried turkey from the store. Paul, My entire Thibodeaux Family line (23) have been here in our home since Monday and will all be gone by Tuesday. This is the first time for some to ever be here in Louisiana and the first time in 19 years we have all been under one roof sharing everything, cousins sleeping everywhere. No one stayed in a hotel. Started out great , had jambayla one night , shrimp gumbo another night , our son and wife brought crawfish pie. Had great Christmas dinner planned, had 4 family members needing to go to emergency room, results strep-throat. So Christmas dinner was really just turkey and left overs from the previous meals. Today it was a huge pot of beef & veggie soup. Youngest great-niece lost her first tooth at the age of 41/2 and 2nd tooth is also loose. I wanted this to ber a memorable Christmas I guess they won't forget Christmas at Aunt Shirley and Uncle John's home. It;'s been great having my family here in our home. It was a time where both my brother and I were able to explain and share with our chidren the history of our ancestors and our life as children with our parents who were both deaf. It also was a time where my brother and I with our families visited our parents, grandparents and aunts grave together as a family. Imagine a group of 23 people standing around a grave in St. Johns Cemetery wisiting loved ones and sharing funny stories about each one of them. What a great Christmas for me, as I know this will be the last time we will possibly all be togethert again in my lifetime. God is good and I have been Blessed.
