I am having trouble with his parentage. He died at age 35, according to death or burial record of 1887 from Carencro in SWLR, so he was b. abt. 1852, probably in Avoyelles Parish, where his family is in the census in 1850. His father and brother (or half-brother?) are both named Henrich/Heinrich/Henry Christoph/e Stemann (or variant spelling), so it's a bit confusing as to who's who. Can someone please check Cyprien's "SW La. Records" marriage record to see if his parents are listed? Or possibly the SWLR CD for any paternal grandparents listed for his children (below)? Joseph Henri b. 4 Oct. 1877, recorded at Port Barre church Joseph Ulysse b. abt 1879? Port Barre? (I couldn't find his birth in SWLR books; his death is there.) Philomene b. 2 Mar 1881, Port Barre or Carencro area? (I couldn't find her birth in SWLR books; date is from her headstone at St. Peter's in Carencro) Ludovic b. 12 Mar 1885, recorded at Carencro church I have more info on the children if anyone's interested. An additional question, if you'll bear with me: Where would I find Avoyelles Parish (Marksville area, probably) church records for Cyprien's possible birth or baptism record (if his family was Catholic)? DOBR volumes perhaps? Various spellings I've found are: STEMMANN, STEMMANS, STEMANN, STEMMONS, STEMMAN, STANNMAN, STEMAN, STAYMAN, STEIMAN Thanks so much for any help. :) Liz Hall Morgan Los Angeles, CA (Sulphur, LA native) ------------------------------- To check our Archive http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/acadian/ ------------------------------- To subscribe to the list, please send an email to ACADIAN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'subscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message. 1. Re: [ACADIAN] Stemmann, Cyprien-- thanks & more thoughts on research

    3. Paul, Thanks very much for the help. I was hoping the SWLR CD or DOBR might give a quick answer for Cyprien Stemmann's parents, but your lookups were still very helpful as I have misplaced my SWLR Stemmann pages I copied a couple years ago & haven't typed all the text details into my software yet. (That'll teach me. :) ) The misspelling as "Steinman" is a good reminder for me; I may try more "bad" spellings in the censuses where I can't find people. Or I may have to just grit my teeth and search page by page. Avelina Granger (the "Vina" in 1850?) is a good mom candidate for Cyprien, but I will have to also be patient & search Avoyelles resources for confirmation. Thanks very much for the book titles; some may be out here in So. Calif. or available by interlibrary loan. Or maybe I can contact the church if it still exists. And/or get Henry C. (II)'s succession record. That should clarify things a lot. The naturalization records should give a lot more on the immigrant Henry/Heinrich Christophe (I) Stemmann. I wonder if NARA or Avoyelles Parish is the better (cheaper?) place to inquire for copies? Avoyelles Parish courthouse website does not look very researcher-friendly. Hmmm... well, couldn't hurt to e-mail. Thanks for reading all my thinking aloud--well, in print. :) I think trying to explain things (even not very clearly) helped me put some pieces together & also see where the missing bits are. My suppositions may not all be correct, so now I have to stop wanting quick Internet answers and order some records. But I think I'm on the right track. Any other research suggestions appreciated. :) A bientot, Liz in Los Angeles, via Sulphur, LA p.s. I do find it very interesting that the Austrian or German Stemmann (II) married two French or Cajun women. He must have spoken French or learned very quickly! And his son Cyprien married my great-grandma Octavie McBride, who, despite the (Irish? Scottish?) name spoke only French, so the Stemmanns were very quickly assimilated into Cajun culture--as were the McBrides, I believe. (Octavie's parents were William McBride & Melasie Hollier, and I'm fairly sure Melasie spoke only French, also.) Gordon from this list has posted a lot on the McBrides, I think. ________________________________ From: "pleblan@aim.com" <pleblan@aim.com> To: acadian@rootsweb.com Sent: Tue, May 11, 2010 11:08:48 PM Subject: Re: [ACADIAN] Stemmann, Cyprien m. 1876 Opelousas Marie Octavie McBride Henri C in 1850 census age 33, 1817 (Self) reported name of Steinman = IN (I guess we have another (earlier) spelling) (I wonder if census taker knew of German coast Stein family) Born in Germany!!!!
