Note: this is a _long_ post. Thank you anyone reading for your patience. :) Going backwards in census for Cyprien Stemman/s, etc. & family (1880 in Paul's previous post) In 1870 US census: Cyprien & brother or half-brother? Henry STUMAN [sic] are listed in Vermilionville p.o. (Lafayette), Lafayette Parish, LA, ages 17 (Cyprien) & 19 (Henry). Both are listed as M, W, field hands b. in LA, working for Belzire RIU? or RICE? Year: 1870; Census Place: , Lafayette, Louisiana; Roll M593_516; Page: 311B; Image: 141; Family History Library Film: 552015. (image #116 in Lafayette Parish on Ancestry) Can't find either in 1860 so far. 1850 US Federal Census about Henry C. Steinman [sic] - census reads Stemman Henry C. Stemman age 23 [sic- I think it reads 33] b. abt 1827 [sic--I think it should be 1817] birthplace: Germany Male Home: Avoyelles [Parish], LA family # 681 Household: Henry C. Stemman, age [33], M, sadler, b. Germany Nina [sic] -- I think this is "Vina," prob. Avelina Granger? age 17, F, b. La. Henry, age 3/12 (3 months--so born abt. July 1850?), b. La. Year: 1850; Census Place: , Avoyelles, Louisiana; Roll M432_229; Page: 147B; Image: 299. (Ancestry: image #86 in Avoyelles Parish) Hebert's SWLR v. 5, p. 530 has "STEMMANN, Hinrisle [sic] Christophe m. 25 June 1849 Avelina GRANGER" (Opel. Ct. Hse. mar. #666). SWLR v. 7, p. 434 has: "STEMMAM, Henry Christophe (d. [deceased] Henry & Marie CROUZE) m. 21 Jan. 1863 Petronnille ARCENAUX, wid. of John JOHNSON" (St. John Church, Lafayette). Same page gives a succession for a "STEMMENS, Henry C." dated 8 Dec. 1865, Opelousas Courthouse. So, I now have 2 or 3 Henry Stemmans with 3 different wives: Marie Crouze (Cruz? Crouse? Krause?), Avelina Granger, and Petronille Arcenaux, and two possible death/succession dates or at least general timeframes. Ancestry's World Archives Project is working on indexing "Selected U.S. Naturalizations," where I found this in the microfilmed card index to nats. in La. (currently unindexed, but in alpha order): "Henrich Christoph STEMANN" b. May 1816, AUSTRIA arr. in U.S. 19 Oct 1846, New Orleans, LA [can't find in passenger lists - wrong date?] naturalized 22 Nov 1848, Marksville, Avoyelles Parish, LA, 13th District Court See: Record of Minutes, Bk. M., p. 191, 13th District Court, Marksville, Avoyelles, LA, “F/O.” Nov. 22, 1848. (Don't know what f/o means) And, a distant cousin says they have a passport of "Heinrick Christoph Stemmann," b.1827 Buxtehude, Germany, occupation sadler. (but they have not worked all this out yet either) SO--- at first I was trying to make Cyprien's brother Henry fit the spouse of Petronille Arceneaux, but he'd only be 12 or 13 at marriage, and if he had kids before 1870, why is he alone in the 1870 census, working as a field hand with Cyprien? This was making my head explode. :) So now my hypothesis is that: There is a German or Austrian Heinrich Christoph Stemmann I who married Marie Crouze back in the old country. Their son Heinrich Christoph II (HC II) b. 1817 or 1827 in Buxtehude, Germany? or Austria? HC II immigrated c. 1846 and was naturalized in Marksville 1848 HC II then married Avelina Granger (Helena or Celina, acc. to one online tree) in Opelousas in 1849; they have: Henry (HC III?) abt 1850 & Cyprien abt 1851/2? both in Avoyelles Parish? (there in 1850 census) Does Avelina die between 1851 & 1863? HC I dies by Jan. 1863, in Germany or Austria? HC II m. Petronille Arcenaux/eaux 21 Jan. 1863 in Lafayette; they have: (possibly) Edmund? according to an online tree, in 1864? and Joseph, b. Dec. 1865 (lived to 1931, ancestor of most of the Stemmann/Stemmans family in Lafayette area) HC II dies 8 Dec. 1865 Petronille has child Cyrus, b. (or baptized? 9 Dec. 1866, Lafayette -- note date is 1 yr after father's succession? -- SWLR v. 8 p. 476. "Henri Stemman" listed as father.) Do Cyrus & Edmund die before 1870 census? Or can I just not find them and Petronille? I do find her later in 1900 & 1910 censuses. HC III and Cyprien are working together as field hands in Lafayette in 1870 census. Cyprien marries my great-grandmother Marie Octavie McBride in 1876 in Opelousas. They have 4 children (see previous posts), only one of whom (Philomene who m. Romain Weber) has children. (Octavie later marries Constant Legere & has 5 more children, including my grandmother Elia Legere.) HC III dies before 1880? Can't find him in that census. Cyprien d. 1887, Carencro area Petronille d. after 1910 census. ________________________________ From: "pleblan@aim.com" <pleblan@aim.com> To: acadian@rootsweb.com Sent: Tue, May 11, 2010 10:25:05 PM Subject: Re: [ACADIAN] Stemmann, Cyprien m. 1876 Opelousas Marie Octavie McBride Them in 1880 census Cyprien (self?) reported age 26 (born 1854) born in LA, mother born in LA, Father's birthplace blank?
