I was watching the Weather Channel this past weekend and they were doing a show called "Cantore Stories".  I thought it was a positive piece on Cajun culture.  He was filming at "Bayou Teche", and in front of the "Breau Bridge" signs enjoying crawfish one evening and then good food, music and dancing at 8:30 AM the next morning.  I noticed one of the families interviewed had the name QUIBODEAUX is this another way of spelling the Thibodeau name? Good question, Alan Parish priests and other responsible folks have a tendency to transcribe what they thought they heard in the record they inscribe in the register;or postpone entering the record of baptism into the register until later in the day, when they tend to confuse the family name of the baby's mother with the family name of her grandmother. So I'm not surprised that Thibodeau gets spelled Quibodeaux -- or, that Descoteaux gets spelled Decato. Sorry guys Different family. Joseph l'Espagnol, called the Spanard, went up the Mississippi River to (big) Illinois territory. When the family came back down the River (by 1777) they had become the Quebedeau family. They settled in Pointe Coupeé and some later moved to Bayou Teche. I wonder if Joseph led the annual trading trips to Quebec and picked up that nickname? His wife was a Beau which is not a Breau even though many name police try and correct her name.
