Marsha The date is what causes me to believe the info is correct. Wasn't it less than 30 days after Pearl Harbor? We had already been under general mobilizing for several years. The men were gone and it was better to have a family member sign as witness rather than an unknown male. Pere Jean - any church requirements about gender of witnesses? Please send me a copy of the document & I will look. You could contact the Archdiocese and get a fresh copy. Ask them to verify the names. http://www.archdiocese-no.org/archives/genealogy.php You can also get a copy of the (civil) license from the secretary of state it may be different. http://www.sos.louisiana.gov/tabid/633/Default.aspx Paul -----Original Message----- From: mladner Am in need of some help with my Brgeron/Ladner line. Paul, Thank you Paul. Don't know why it didn't dawn on me regarding the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Edgar entered the Army on January 9, 1942 and was d/c Aug. 1945. He served in Europe. Will send you a copy of the marriage certificate separately. According to church law, only those marriages are valid which are contracted before the pastor of the parish, the Bishop of the diocese, or a priest delegated by either of them, and at least two witnesses. (1918 Code of Canon Law) The same rule applied before the Code took effect. There has never been a norm regarding the gender of the witnesses. In fact, at the wedding of my parents, the witnesses were my father's brother and my mother's father. The custom of having a "best man" and a "maid [or matron] of honor" is a rather recent development, which may have begun in the 1940's, when a lot of men between their 20s and their 40s were otherwise occupied in Europe or in the Pacific.
