André They were 1st cousins 1 generation removed. (A 2 to 3 Dispensation) There is NO New Orleans dispensation. (Anyone at Notre Dame to check the archive for correspondence?) The priest would (probably) NOT marry them without a dispensation. Local civil authorities, if they knew of the relationship, would not have either. Pere Jean - how easy would it be to get a dispensation? Would it have been easier to later present the family & get the union blessed? They would have to leave the parish (county) to marry. It is a little far (& early) but could they have gone down to Thibodaux to marry? Any other likely places for a civil marriage?
