    3. In 1975, in the dioceses of the United States, marriage between 1st cousins and 1st cousins once removed would not have been celebrated without proper dispensation; and these dispensations would not have been granted except in "special circumstances" (e.g. pregnancy). The motive was to avoid, or at least minimize, the genetic disorders which are the consequence of inbreeding. In 1875, these norms would have been applied stringently, in Massachusetts and, I presume, in Louisiana. As to the question of validating a civil union between close relatives, I would think that, in 1875, that would be done only if once of the spouses was in immediate danger of death. (A 2 to 3 Dispensation) There is NO New Orleans dispensation. (Anyone at Notre Dame to check he archive for correspondence?) The priest would (probably) NOT marry them without a dispensation. ocal civil authorities, if they knew of the relationship, would not ave either. Pere Jean - how easy would it be to get a dispensation? Would it have een easier to later present the family & get the union blessed? They would have to leave the parish (county) to marry. It is a little ar (& early) but could they have gone down to Thibodaux to marry? ny other likely places for a civil marriage?
