Can anybody tell me whether St Michel de Cantrelle was where the town of Convent is now, in St. James County? I'm in Halifax, Nova Scotia, & unfamiliar with Louisiana.
St. Michel's Catholic Church is in Convent, LA. It is named after Michel Cantrelle, the commandant, who lived across the Mississippi River about 2-3 miles south of St. James, LA in St. James Parish, LA. I agree with all you said. I have a good 'friend' at my home town library, who tells me what they can and can't receive. It's a very small library, and I have doubts that they could expand. It's always a possibility, however. I did find, though, through channels that I won't reveal but are completely valid, that the same town had problems with a local museum, where some employees went through old records and summarily dumped them into the garbage. Records for the entire history of the local poor farm were lost then. And I had a close relative who had died there. Now I have no information except the newspaper mention of his passing. So, I donate nothing to that place. There is also a gen society there, but for a long time, it was basically unresponsive to emails for help. The library has proved to be a godsend for genealogists there. Their collection is huge, for their size. And they are extremely helpful. I have found the same to be true for many small libraries in Michigan. One helped me find a descendant to whom I could give a diary that had belonged to an ancestor. I had transcribed it, and the library has posted all the photos and the transcription on line. Others have helped me find newspaper articles about relatives, etc. Thankfully, they all seem to continue this outreach program, no matter who works there. The secret to their success is their use of qualified computer experts who can set up good websites and maintain them, and then interact with them constantly. I love using the web, but at my age, even this will end some day. So, i'm in the process of going thru all my 'stuff' and asking if the library can hold it. Some no, mostly yes. I'm thrilled to know that my papers and photos will find a home some day. I've been doing one thing that I found was helpful to a particular library. My home town was Alpena, Michigan. My dad was mayor there for 13 years. I have some information that related to him or others in 'charge' there over those years, so I've donated most of them to the library. While I lived there as an adult for 2 years later, I went to local townships and copied old records. I finally have gotten to transcribing them or simply scanning them for others to transcribe. I'm mailing them to the same library in that town. So, for that much at least, I'm finding homes. They also have a genealogy section there, and since I'm in the same situation as you are (no younger relatives alive any more that are even remotely interested in the family, and no kids to take over the genealogy (uninterested)), I'm asking that library to take over all that I have. I also have many books on genealogy subjects, and they probably will take them. But there are other things, family photos, etc. that I will just leave to the kids to take over. I'm scanning all those, in hopes that someone will be able to use them. I'm in charge of our family newsletter, and the day will come when I will have to drop that as well. (I'm 76) I will start by sending out notices that someone will have to take it over and if they want to keep it up, I'll ship them all old records and copies. That will be quite a bit of paper. Thank heavens for book rate that the PO still allows! I am curious, when we pass on, and stop paying for the ancestry membership, do all our old trees still exist in ancestry? I sure hope so! Maybe it's time to ask ancestry.com about that issue. My plan this summer is to go through ALL the things I have in both my office and my 5 huge file cabinets in the laundry room, scan everything I can, and send CDs of the scans to anyone who is vaguely related to the things on the CD. Mostly the library. Once it's all organized and refiled, then i can package up anything and send it off. I'm hoping that the library will take most of it. If you have a library that is in the right area, and can establish a relationship to someone there that will work in the genealogy or history section, then that may be where you want to ask if they want what you have. Thank you, Roberta, and hi, my cousins! Thank you for asking me to chime in! This is a GREAT IDEA and this project will be welcomed by family researchers of Acadian lines who enrich and add to their genealogies through the use of DNA testing. The Amerindian Ancestry out of Acadia project Roberta refers to in her post was established in 2006 and has many of the founder Y and mtDNA results that we now rely upon as cornerstones in our genealogy research. For the Y DNA in particular, our "persons of interest" studies have yielded several Y DNA haplogroup signatures for Acadian surnames and members will find surname "subgroups" with Y DNA results when they view our project information -- as new privacy rules limit the display of ALL DNA results we have in our project on our public website unless members expressly allow their results to be viewed by "anyone." The Amerindian Ancestry out of Acadia Family Tree DNA project has been EXTREMELY fortunate to have the very generous assistance of project participants, genealogists, scientists, engineers, and published historians in building this data. Surname projects started in the Amerindian Ancestry out of Acadia project have led to published articles and large-scale studies -- for example the C-P39 Y DNA study that Roberta and I manage was borne out of the Native Y DNA results of male descendants of Germain Doucet b. 1641 and others of this same haplogroup that had accumulated in our project. Founding members of our Amerindian Ancestry out of Acadia project have also contributed to the findings we've had for haplogroup A2, and the X2b4 mtDNA haplogroup types by allowing their kits to be added to these mtDNA projects that Roberta Estes and I also manage through Family Tree DNA. Roberta Estes has published numerous, valuable blogs related to Native Y DNA, Native mtDNA and the X2b4 mtD! NA haplogroup findings in particular and I encourage all to read and share Roberta's blogs with others. We've lately integrated "allied families" in our Amerindian Ancestry out of Acadia project. The impact of non-Acadian "allied families" on our recent-generation autosomal DNA results (and matches!) cannot be understated. Unlike the Y DNA surname and mtDNA studies, where DNA haplogroups are repeatable through paternal-line and maternal-line descendants spanning centuries, autosomal DNA segments are contributed to the autosomal DNA tester by both parents, follow more recent family lines, and these genetic segments may or may not be shared among all siblings in the same way. We are just beginning to discover the allied families that enter Acadian family lines in recent generations and detect their contributions to our DNA and so this is an area that will be receiving more attention over time. Like Roberta, I'm a published author of several articles and books related to the field of genetic genealogy, with my first article, "Finding Anne Marie: The Hidden History of our Acadian Ancestors," published in 2005, and, like Roberta, I am also an affiliate National Geographic researcher. As with other projects which I co-manage with Roberta Estes and David Pike, I'm pleased to support Roberta Estes in this valuable endeavor. Now that's funny. I think we're all mutts, no matter how many sources of our heritage we can find. But I have to say, I was a little jealous when I saw Shirley's DNA results. I don't have as many, and she has some native American, and our family was wrong, there doesn't seem to be any in mine. This is a fun conversation here! It is interesting to see your question as to what to do with the 'stuff' you've collected at home re genealogy. If you come up with other good ideas, share them here! Roberta, I think it would be great if you set up an Acadian project on FTDNA. I have no yDNA or mtDNA that is directly Acadian, but have one 2nd Acadian GGF and one 3rd Acadian GGF. And while I am only 1/8 Acadian, 1/3 of my DNA matches have Acadian or Cajun roots. Paul, Is it possible to compile GEDMatch IDs? You'd think that Rocky would show a higher percentage for West Europe. The Iberian peninsula is pretty much just Spain and Portugal. France is included in West Europe. Rocky has a really high % for Ireland. Somewhere in his lineage, his people were from that ethnic group, I assume. I didn't know that France did not allow testing of MTDNA. That does give the OTHER half of the story, for heaven's sakes. And that's just as important as the father's side. Ireland 42% Italy/Greece 36% Iberian Peninsula 11% Great Britain 6% Europe East 4% Europe West 1% We were surprised at Rocky's high per cent for Ireland and low for Iberian Peninsula. Then we were told that the only testing for DNA in France that is allowed is for paternal testing. Now Rocky feels his DNA is not correct. Rocky connects to both BROUSSARD brothers, his mother direct back to Joseph and his dad a grandmother who goes back to Alexandre. Between his parents he connects to Michel and Michelle AUCOIN BOUDREAUX 5 different ways. I think between his parents he can claim, if not a direct ancestor, "kissin cousins" to almost all who have Acadian heritage. He also has a German line, FOLSE and of course French such as BEGNAUD, TAUZIN and a few others. There were even first cousins marrying, but that was no surprise. My dad's side was the Irish thing. Is it time to retire: from work or genealogy? Retired from income producing activities; volunteer and research is never ending! Who am I? Marie Mathilde Bousquet Anderson (Teal) I was born in Houston TX, we live outside Boerne TX My parents are from LA, Mother born in Ponchatoula, moved to NO when she was 8; Daddy born in NO both in 1906 Mother's father was French/English; through his line I am in Mayflower Society, Daughters of Confederacy & DAR. Mother's mother is French/English and Acadian; through her line I am in Magna Charta, DAR, Huguenot, Colonial Dames of America (and 17th Century), Daughters of 1812 and Daughters of Confederacy. Daddy's father is French & French Canadian (settled in NO and Biloxi) Daddy's mother was 1st generation Irish decent. My brother did Y and Mitochondrial then we both did autosomal. My daughter recently did autosomal. My brother and I both show 42% Irish My mother, grandmother and then my sister did quite a bit of research. I have inherited their research and am trying to put it in order for future generations. My sister printed books on mother's lines and daddy's. Brick Walls? Oh yes! Always looking for "cousins" willing to share documentation. Glad to invite anyone to view my Ancestry and welcome help/hints and requests anyway I can help. Your family wasn't necessarily wrong. Ethnicity results only reach back on the average 5-6 generations at which time each ancestor's DNA is at the 1% level. These tests don't reliably pick up below 1% and that amont can be "noise." Furthermore, ancestral DNA is not passed in each generation at the 50% level, meaning you could get more from one ancestor and less from another. https://dna-explained.com/2015/06/09/how-much-indian-do-i-have-in-me/ So you may have a Native ancestor, just far enough back that they don't know in ethnicity testing, but could be discernable in Y or mitochondrial DNA testing of the appropriate lines. Hi Cousins and Cousines, I'm really glad to see so many people testing their DNA. Through Ancestry, you can see who you're related to, and the common ancestors. At Family Tree DNA, you have a chromosome browser, so you can attribute actual DNA segments to certain ancestors and see how you match. While the ethnicity estimates are interesting, through any vendor, they are the least reliable of any type of testing. I want to emphasize the word, estimates. For those of you who don't know, I write the blog www.dna-explained.com and have been involved with genetic genealogy since the beginning, back in the dark ages of the year 2000:) I began writing DNA Reports about 2004, am an affiliate researcher with National Geographic, etc. Yes, I love the field. Having said that, I want to caution people about reading too much into ethnicity results. I wrote about my own here, broken down by my known heritage and then showing my DNA results from the different vendors. They vary widely. https://dna-explained.com/2017/01/11/concepts-calculating-ethnicity-percenta ges/ This article talks about how to calculate what ethnicity percentages you can expect from your known genealogy. A couple people have written me personally wondering why they had this or that location in their ethnicity. Bottom line is that I can't tell you why. But I did write this article about how ethnicity is calculated and why you may see unexpected results. https://dna-explained.com/2016/02/10/ethnicity-testing-a-conundrum/ Populations in Europe were and are still very mobile. Think about the Celts settling the British Isles, for example. For all vendors, resolution in Europe and differentiating between countries is difficult, at best. Furthermore, nearly all vendors have "too much" Scandinavian. Ancestry tends to be the worst of these. I also want to remind people in this group that DNA testing in France is illegal, and that's for genetic genealogy or paternity, either one. There are actually labs just across the border that do a bangup business in paternity testing for the French, but that's a topic for another time. The accuracy of ethnicity testing depends on two things, the reference panel that you are being compared to, and the algorithm of the testing company. The DNA results from France have come from elsewhere and in essence, there is a big hole in the middle of Europe. Unfortunately, for us, that hole is exactly the reference panel we need. While I'm talking about DNA, you are all welcome to subscribe to my blog. It's free. In addition to publishing one "how to" or technical article each week, I typically publish something of general interest and then on the weekend, I publish an article about one of my ancestors that always has a DNA component. Often, people use these as examples of how to apply DNA to genealogy. Sometimes, I meet other cousins through these articles. I have not begun on the Acadian lines, per se, meaning start to finish, but I will. I was hoping to visit Acadia first. Maybe next year. In the mean time, I have written a couple of articles about my Acadian ancestors. Some of these may be your ancestors too - Antoine Lore/Lord, Radegonde Lambert and Jacques dit Beautmont de Bonnevie. https://dna-explained.com/2016/03/06/anthony-lore-1805-18621867-river-trader -or-pirate-52-ancestors-114/ https://dna-explained.com/2016/09/18/radegonde-lambert-16211629-16861693-eur opean-not-native-52-ancestors-132/ https://dna-explained.com/2014/06/29/jacques-dit-beaumont-de-bonnevie-acadia n-from-paris-52-ancestors-26/ Last, I would like to suggest one other article that is very relevant to Acadian families and research about endogamy - the intermarriage within a particular group over time. https://dna-explained.com/2017/03/10/concepts-the-faces-of-endogamy/ I am hopeful that using segment matching that we will eventually be able to identify specific segments contributed by specific originating ancestors. Once these segments can be identified, then they can be recognized in individuals which will help break down brick walls. I also want to mention for those who aren't aware that Marie Rundquist, our cousine, is also very involved with this type of research as well and is my co-administrator and co-founder on several projects. While there is not a Fathers of Acadia project, Marie's project is the closest and has many Acadian surnames represented. I'll ask Marie to chime in and discuss her project(s). Perhaps we should form an Acadian DNA project at Family Tree DNA so that anyone who descends from the Acadian population, whether through Y (paternal surname for males only), mitochondrial (matrilineal line) or autosomal DNA (any lines) can join and participate by comparing DNA.
