Campaigns - None What does "AGS" and "GM" mean.? Where can I obtain a copy of the service record? Would the service record show his residence or where he actually served? Please bear with me, all of you are probably a little tired of my interest in this family.. Thanks, Marsha

    3. Hi, I telephoned the number on the link. It is the author's personal number in Belle Chasse, La. His name is Richard. He was extremely helpful. However, the lines I am currently researching from 1791-1810 or so are not in the issue. They are early Plaquemines Parish. Richard is descended from Hache & Gallant families mainly. The publication is $80.00 at the present time if anyone is interested please give him a call. he seems to be very knowledgable. Jackie Hostage ========================================== Prayer for paternal blessing In old Quebec the paternal blessing was one of the most moving times of the  New Year. It reaffirmed the father’s authority and preceded the mass which the  entire family attended before going to share a meal with the grand-parents. It  was a significant gathering at which the following prayer was generally  recited: May God bless you and grant you health and  happiness throughout the coming year, in the name of the Father, the Son  and the Holy Spirit. Amen. The New Year’s Eve blessing is one of  the most endearing memories of my childhood. My grandfather came to the states  from Quebec in the 1860s and my grandmother was the last child and only one born  in the states to Quebecois parents. By the time it got down to my generation, we  were a small family but everyone – uncles, aunts, cousins -- gathered on New  Year’s eve to receive my grandmother’s blessing as she was the senior GIROUX of  the family. When she died in 1938 my mother became the one to bestow the  blessing and none of her siblings or their children ever missed the occasion --  even if they had to do it by telephone. But I will always treasure my own  private blessing every New Year’s eve as mother and I went outdoors (weather  permitting) to contemplate the starsand she laid her hands on me in blessing  before we welcomed the New Year. Now that role has fallen to me as  the senior descendant. On behalf of all of the wonderful ancestors who preceded  me, may I wish you and yours all GOD’S BLESSINGS FOR THE NEW  YEAR. ------------------------------- To check our Archive http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/acadian/ ------------------------------- To subscribe to the list, please send an email to ACADIAN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'subscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message.  You will receive a confirmation e-mail to try & stop "machine" enrollment spam.  Give it the "Name" you would like us to call you. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ACADIAN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

He was 71. Better known as "Bobby Charles," he helped pioneer the musical genre that came to be known as swamp pop. His compositions included the hits See You Later, Alligator, which he wrote at age 14 and was later covered by Bill Haley & the Comets; and Walking to New Orleans, written for Fats Domino. (I Don't Know Why I Love You) But I Do was a 1950s classic Guidry composed for Frogman Henry. The song was later featured on the soundtrack to the 1994 film Forrest Gump. Charles was born in Abbeville in 1938 and grew up listening to Cajun and country music, counting Domino and Hank Williams among his idols. Swamp pop historian Shane Bernard, who interviewed Charles and others for his book, Swamp Pop: Cajun Rhythm and Blues, recalled Guidry's first meeting with Domino in the 1950s. Charles, then a teenager, pitched See You Later Alligator, to Domino at a bar in Abbeville, but Domino turned him down, Bernard said. The song later earned Charles a recording contract with Chicago R&B label Chess Records and became a smash hit for Haley in the early years of rock 'n' roll. "The next time he met Fats, Fats remembered him," Bernard said. Charles later wrote Walking to New Orleans and other songs that Domino recorded. Charles was one of the most prolific songwriters in history, even though he never learned to play an instrument or read a note. His songs have been covered by the likes of Joe Cocker, Ray Charles and Kris Kristofferson, and he counted Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Willie Nelson were among his fellow musicians and friends. "He was one of those people you'd call a musician's musician. The songs just came to him," Bernard said. "He was very gifted in that sense." Aside from his time on tour and a brief period when he lived in Woodstock, N.Y., Charles spent most of his life in Vermillion Parish. He spent much of his later days at Dockside Studio in Maurice, where he recorded several albums on his own Rice n' Gravy label in the 1990s and 2000s. "He showed up at the door one day and said he thought God dropped a studio down the street from him so he could record," said Cezanne Wish Nails, who runs the studio with her husband Steve. "This was his home away from home." Dockside Studio briefly became Charles' home when his house burned down in the mid 90s, along with all his possessions. He later moved to Holly Beach, only to return to Vermilion Parish following Hurricane Rita in 2005. It was in the studio where Charles was at his best — he recorded most of his songs in one take, Nails said. Charles developed a special rapport with guitarist Sonny Landreth, with whom he recorded several songs during his later years. "He would hum a melody and Sonny would pick it up and play it," she said. "It was magic the way they were able to communicate." Charles was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2007. Somewhat of a recluse, he was honored at the Louisiana Jazz and Heritage Festival that year, but cancelled his appearance at the last minute due to health issues. Despite his declining health, Charles never missed an opportunity to record. He recently finished recording what will be his last album, and continued to write songs up until his death. "I wasn't ready for him to go," Nails said. "(Thursday) I went to check the answering machine, and there he was, singing a song to me." "We lost the greatest songwriter ever," Steve Nails said. ----- Original Message ----- From: pleblan@aim.com To: acadian@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, January 16, 2010 2:29 PM Subject: [ACADIAN] Robert Charles Guidry: aka Bobby Charles, Louisiana Singer and Songwriter, Dies at 71 From "our friend" Daryl (Gui(l)dry dit) Labine.  His mother's name line Jaques-Louis Leblanc family ended up in Ontario Jacques-Louis' brother was the Pierre-Jacques that ended up in Louisiane that we worked a few days ago.
